JACOB JUSTEN AT THE EASJI SIDE ^cwooo, l*"1-Get Away From & Crowd. The advice which Robt. Burdette gives to boys roey well be taken, not only, by them, but by older persona. "Get away from the crowd for a little while everyday and think. Stand on one side and let the world ran by, while you get acquaint ed with yourself and eee what kind of a fellow you are. Ascertain from original •sources* if you are really the 0 manner of man you say you areand if you are always honest; if your life is as good and upright at 11 o'clock at night as it is at noon; if you are as good a temperance man on a fishing excursion as you are at a Sunday school picnic, if in short, you are really the sort of a man your father hopes you are, and your sweetheart be lieves you are. Get on intimate terms with yourself, and believe.me, every time you come out from one' of those private interviews, you will be a stronger, better, purer man. Don't forget this and it will do you good." » A FEARFUL RECORD.--During a period- of twenty-fqtir years in an American city having a population of 45,000, there were engaged in. the wholesale liquor bus iness forty-three firms comprising sixty members. I was one of the sixty. Up to this year, 1886, thirty-one out of the sixty became well-known drunkards, seventeen became hard drinkers, thirteen moderate drinkers, thirty-seven have failed in business, thirteen have died drankards, four left the business through conscientious scruples, two have become partly insane, while three are now mem bers of temperance organizations. Forty-four out of the. sixty are still alive, and only eight of them are known to be men of solid financial standing, while only three of the thirteen who died drunkards left valuable estates. 1 know the above figures are correct, as I was personally acquainted with fifty-six of this number for many yeiars, and many of them were men of first-class business West McHenry, III, I I! fTFH1 J XII11 • MCHENRY, ILL.
