TXMANTS CONTINUS TO BE PROTECTED t UNDER NEW LAW "Increased responsibilities for the Lake-McHenry county community in connection with federal rent control, effective July 1, 1950, are included in the new law. It was stated by J. Edwin Porter, associate area rent director. He said the n^w law is substantially the same as the old one and that under it tenants continue to be protected against unreasonable rent increases and against illegal evictions,- while landlords are assured fair net operating incomes. All rent office administration work here will be carried on. hi said, subject to recommendations of the rent advisory boards. The Office of Housing Expediter is continued to June 30, 1951, by the new law and authorized to carry on rent control administration through rent offices like ours." said Porter. "However, even though the law is extended one year, control will continue after Dec. 31 of this year only if, before that date, our local governing body takes affirmative action to declare that a shortage of rental housing exists that requires the continuation of rent control." Permit rent advisory boards to recommend area-wide adjustments to compensate for blanket increases in local real efctate taxes. The new law also continues veterans' preference in the purchase or rental of new construction. Under the provision, veterans of World War II are given 30 days preference to buy or rent new housing not built for owner occupancy.
