McHenry now has the facilities to handle a tournament and every effort is being made to handle the event in McHenry J ni00 styie Eight teams are entered in the flier McHenry Co-ops got oft to a flying start on the home floor last Sunday night as' both teams gained victories over the Cary A. C. teams. ' in the first game, Don Howard's boys came through with' a 35 to 21 win. Manager Bill Bolger's first team Co-ops rolled up a lead for three quarters, but had to hustle to ward off the visitors in a game that ended 54 to 47. Next Sunday the Crystal Lake Boosters *111 be here for two games, starling at 7:30. On Thursday night of next week the Co-ops will send one team to Crystal Lake to meet the Wyman's five at 7:30. Hebron's high-scoring basketball team came to town on Tuesday night of this week and smacked down our Warriors to the tune of 56 to 31 It was a miserable second quarter that spelled doom for the home tepm after a fairly even first quarter. In fact, Hebron led by only 3 rtoint8 at the end of the first quarter then (outscored the Warriors 23 to -3 in the sccoud quarter. Phil Judson scored 18 points for the winners while Bob McCulla Icil the losing fight with 15. Hebron's ball handling and acurate shooting combined to prove too much for the har-trying Warriors. Steffan. 510. j Around the county one hears that j Hebron is again riding the crest and will be the team to beat in TRAPPING SEASON The sixty-day trapping season for Illinois fur-bearing animals opened Dec. 1. with prospects for a better 1950 fur market than last year, according to officials of the state Department of Conservation. Last year the department issued 21.069 trapping licenses, and trappers caught more than half a million furbearers. Muskrat made UP more than half this total, the remainder being opossum, raccoon, mink, skunk, weasel, and red and grey fox. There is no open season on beaver vor otter in Illinois. Trailing by 4 points going into the last period, the Warriors put on a last minute fight to eke out a hard-earned victory. The McHenry J. V. squad almost blew a comfortable lead when they scored only 2 points in the last quarter, but managed to bring home a 33 to 30 victory. Both McHenry teaiqp gained by holding down their fouling while Whitewater lost one man in the first team game and four in the J. V. tussle by way of the personal foul route. McHenry Varsity F.G. F.T. P.F. 3 3 2 2 2 12 P.F. 2 1 4 4 0 5 1 17 -37 A statewide essay contest for Illinois high school boys and gtrls on the need for conserving our natural resources, will be one of i the features of the Chicago Out- ' doors Show which will be presented at Navy Pier, Feb, 16 to 26, It has been announced by officials of the exposition. The contest opened Nov. 27. .Final deadline for essays is Jan. 15. 1951. Boys and girls in their sophomore or junior year in public, parochial or private schools are eligible to compete. All they have to do is write a 200 word composition on "Why Conservation of Our Natural Resources is Necessary". The contest is sponsored by the Illinois division of the Izaak Walton League of America and the Illinois Federation of Sportsmen's clubs. In conjunction with the Outdoors Show's management. Essays are to be sent to the Conservation Essay Committee, 211 North Western Ave., Chicago 47, 111. A jury of leading outdoorsmen and conservationists will judge the essays and select the winners. The essayB will be judged on the basis of merit, sincerity and composition. i Six regional winners will be ^elected--a boy and girl from each of the three zones as established by the Game and Fish Code of the Illinois State Department of Conservation. They will be brought to Chicago as guests of the management of the Outdoors Show, where they will view the fascinating features of the show .and visit points of interest in the city. A "King and Queen of Conservation" for Illinois will be selected by the judges from among these regional winners. The coronation ceremonies will be held on Sunday, Feb. 25. 1951. The event will be televised and broadcast by -radio. The grand award to the king and queen will be a one-week all-expense visit to the Illinois state conservation training camp at Lake Villa, to receive an extensive course in conservation.
