Bob allowed only 6 scattered hits and kept his strikeout ball handy for all emergencies. To back hp Madsen's masterful hurling, his young mates handled everything that came their way with the exception. of one harmless error in the third. The surprise package in the McHenry lineup was Marty Klapperich-- the people's choice. What Marty lacks in experience as a catcher, he makes up in other ways. He threw out two would-be base stealers, held every third strike and pat pepper in the team. Crystal Lake put over a foto in the first inning when J. Feffer scratched a hit, stole second and came home on Willard's single. McHenry caipe back with a run in the second when Paluch singled to center, stole second, moved to third on a wild throw by Gaulke and crossed the plate with ease after Nickerson's long fly, ball wag hauled down in center field. • -- Here We Go! ' It was in the fourth inning that the Merchants started to lay the wood on the ball. Brennan got the first of his three hits to start the jamboree. Paluch drew a pass. Butler slashed a hit to left. Nickerson was safe on an error and Madsen aided his own cause with a long single to left. Four funs were in and that meant the ball game. However, nobody knew that those runs would win the ball game and the boys picked up three more in the fifth. Bob McCulla hit safely to center and was safe at second when the return went through Fitzsimmons. Bob Brennan boomed a triple over ,the left fielder's head and scored on Butler's second hit. Nickerson's hit and a wild pitch got Butler across the plate. Paluch got into the scoring act again in the seventh by hitting safely and then taking advantage of the Vet defense. He moved to second when Don Butler was hit by a pitched ball. He then stole third and kept right on for pay dirt when catcher Gaulke threw the ball into left field. A base on balls to E. Feffer and a safe hit by Bryan brought about Crystal Lake's second and last run in the seventh A cut-off play could have saved this run, but the boys will get around to those maneuvers later. The Merchants picked up two more runs in the eighth to complete their scoring. John Knox walked and McCulla singled. Both advanced on a passed ball and Brennan's third hit sent them home. Bryan got a triple in the ninth, then Madsen went to work in earnest and left the rnnner stranded. t \ The victory was a great pepper- upper for the young Merchant team and they are anxious to get Total* - Score by Innings: M Merchants: 010 430 IK*--11 Crystal Lake: 100 000 100-- 2 Three base hits: Brennan, Bryan. MAVIS PITCHES THRff-WT 6A*f FOR ALGONQUM Irish Shillalah Falls In Bailie With Tomahawk scored without a hit. A Wklk, An error, a stolen base aad ill Infield out did the trick. -- Aadreas Breaks String 1 After Mavis had retired twelve men in a row, Andreas opened the sixth with a single to left. McCracken bunted and both runners were safe when Andreas beat the pitcher's throw; to second. Bockman bunted along the third base line and it was perfect. Bockman crossed first base with yards to spare but was called out by the home plate umpire for stepping out of the box in bunting the ball. Andreas and McCracken were sent back to second and first. Miller hit a fly to right center that looked like it might be a hit but Blanken made a nice eatch doubled McCracken at first. The eighth inning was, another tough one for the Shamrocks. Freund led off with a single to center. He stayed there while Andreas popped out to the pitcher. McCracken lined a beauty down the first base line but Moehle made a nice catch of the ball, stepped on first and Freund was doubled for the third out. . The game ended with Mavis tossing out Bockman. Miller grounded... to second and was thrown out StiUtef fanned. Shamrocks AJ. B. H. Andreas LF . 4 0 1 McCracken m " * » o The Indian tomahawk proved mightier than the Irish shillalah last Sunday as the Indians nosed out the Shamrocks 3 to 1 at Algonquin. The game was a thriller from start to flnifth but Mavis was just a little too tough for McHenry. Rich Freund pitched for the Shamrocks and did a fine job, allowing only nine hits and two walks. Algonquin picked the rigl places for their hits with the result that they scored one run in each of the first three innings. For the Shamrocks in the first, Bockman walked after two outs, stole second and scored on a single to left by Harry Stilling. Algonquin tied the score in their half of the first on a single by Tipps. a sacrifice, and a single by Broederdorf scored Tipps. McCracken stopped further damage when he made, a great play on Boyd's smash to third and threw him out. Sonny Miller came up with the fielding play of the day to get Blanken at first. Sonny was completely stretched out on the ground as he fielded Blanken's smash but got up and still had time to get his man at first.
