YOUR INCOME TAX By Ernest J. Saufoer Deductions and Tax Reduetloa The matter of deductions IS of great importance in filing individual income tax returns. The taxpayer is interested in claiming as many deductions as possible since they result in a tax reduction to him. The law provides what deductions may he claimed. A knowledge of the allowable deductions will help the taxpayer in filing a correct return, r.s well as pro viding the opportunity to reduce the final tax liability. The subject of deductions may be explained in relation to income or in terms of business or nonbusiness expenditures. In relation to income, deductions taken from gross income results in adjusted gross income, and in turn deductions taken from adjusted gross income results in net income. H Of interest to the average taxpayer are the non-business or Page 3, deductions, which include such items as contributions, interest, taxes, casualty losses, medical and dental expenses and miscellaneous expenses. When the sum total of these items is in excess of 10 per cent of the adjusted gross income, then The taxpayer will elect to itemize in preference to the optional standard deduction in computing the tax liability. Optional Standard Deduction The amount of the optional standard deduction depends on the size of the adjusted gross income For many taxpayers, the adjusted gross income will be the same as the gross income. The optional standard deduction spares a taxpayer the necessity of itemising his personal' deductions such 41 contributions, interest, taxes, A cetera. In lieu thereof a definite deduction is allowed the taxpayer. When the adjusted gross income is less than $5,d00, the standard deduction is about 10 per cent of that income amount, and is reflected in the simplified tax table on Page 4 of Form 1040. When the adjusted gross income is $5,000 and over, the standard deduction is exactly 10 per cent of the income amount or $1,000, which ever is less. This applies to single persons or married taxpayers filing jointly. For married people filing separate returns, the maximum deduction is $500. Taxpayers * are urged to compare the actual deductions with the optional standard deduction and use the larger amount. More simply, figure the tax both ways and elect the method that results in a lower tax. If the* optional standard deduction or tax table is selected for computation CT the tax, the taxpayer loses the right to take separately all personal deductions. In addition, he cannot deduct the following credits: 1. Three per cent for a partially tax exejppt Interest from government obligations. 2. Tax paid to a foreign country or a United States possession. 8. Income ?ax paid at source on ' tax-free covenant bonds. Husbands and wives filing separate returns must use the same method of tax computation. If one spouse chooses to itemize actual personal deductions, the other spouse is bound by that eleation and must also Itemize. Itemizing Deductions: . Contributions The amounts of money paid to an organization incorporated for charitable, religious, scientific, literary, educational or governmental purposes sre deductbile, provided it is Incorporated within the United States or any of its possessions or under their laws. Contributions must be made to an organization which does not distribute its earnings to a specific individual or individuals only, or that is not merely s political organization disseminating propaganda or lobb"';ig for or against local or national legislation. A contribution must sctually be paid and not merely pledged for those who are on the cash receipts ana disbursements basis, and also those who are on the accrual basis. The amount of allowable contributions may not exceed 20 pw cent of the adjusted gross income on Line 4, Page 1 of the white Form 1040, and may be claimed only when itemized deductions sre indicated. They may not be claimed on the yellow Form 1040A or on Form 1040 when computing tax according to the tax table, since an allowance of approximately 10 per cent has been made in the table for deductions. Taxpayers are urged to keep receipts for deductions claimed so that when the return is audited, deductions can be substantiated. Pagt FH» ^ ? v; 1.
