That opening date, March life, is creeping right up on us. That's moving day. But, Fred Meyer, Joe May and all the boys Imve been moving for some time getting plans set for this big event. This isn't a little onehorse event. It's a state tournament right in our own back yard. We gave you the first round schedule last week. and think you will find further announcement in this issue. . •Rie first game starts at noon next Sunday. Eight games each day. Somebody ought to get a concession stand there and sell pillows. $ W«i€aJU WARRIORS m COMEBACK KIDS VS. LAKE FOREST Fighting Fourth Period Gives MCHS A 50-49 Victory Fans who like a close, thrilling finish to a basketball game had a double-dipper served up to them Friday night in the home gym as the Warriors( large and small, turned the victory trick against Lake Forest. Coach Cuda's scrappy outfit started the happy evening for home folks with a 46 to 40 overtime victory. Then came the big boys and Coach Fulton piloted his squad over a reeky path to a 50-49 victory.' - The Warriors weren't sharp in the first quarter, but led 16 to 14 at rest time. Then came a miserable second period in which the home team was out-scored 18 to 6. -Nice thing about it -- you can buy a ticket for a buck and a half that covers the entire tournament -- three Sundays. Then you can come and go as you please. Pick out the games you want to see or take squatter's rights like "Butch" Freund and see them all. See separate story about the entertainment planned. "We'll give you a report each week. Basketballs are flying like tags in the air these days as tile season heads for the Ipt roundup.! ^ Woodstock High will be here fYiday night for the last game * of tiie season in the North Sub- Conference. •*-v Both the Woodstock Streaks •nd the Warriors have come a long way since the season opened and both are capable of tetl gqod basketball. v ' We always claim that a Wood- Warrior* -* gtock-McHenry game needs little Hueman# .. * * ballyhoo. John Bolger sank a couple of shots as he tuned up for a great fourth quarter that brought his total up to 18 points. Eon Ford came back into the lineup after sitting out with three fouls. Don Blake popped one through. And Coach Fulton picked the right time to send in Tom Huemann whose fighting spirit turned the Warriors into a determined outfit. - The home boys were trailing 40 to 34 as the buzzer sent them into the final stage of the game. Now, they were on the'r way. Belger got four of his nine baskets in this period. Ford got his fourth basket and carefully sank four out of five shots from the free throw line. And how big those i-pointers dd look! Hue-' mann added another basket. And' how that entire lineup did fight.} Wauconda With time running out, the p boys controlled the ball as seconds ticked away to a 1-point yictery. Twas the perfect finish for t]^ winner WAUCONDA CAGERS PROVE TOO STRON& FOR THE PORKIES The Miller Porkles suffered their second loss in four starts last Sunday night by falling victim to a strong Wauconda bail club, by a score of 105 to 72. Bill Bucknell, the top ranking forward and high scorer in the league in which Wauconda played, led their scoring with 25 baskets and 4 free throws for a total of 54 points, followed by Mathews with 24 points. The wst of the team scored 27 for A total of 105 points. Lloyd Freund and Dick Gibbs lkl the scoring for the Porkies with 19"each, and Glen Peterson and Ray Schmitt held second scoring honors with 14 each. Harry Lundy had 4 and Jack Justen had 2 points. Brennarf and Miller played only a few minute% and made no attempts to score. Wauconda took the lead after two minutes of play and were ahead by a score of 26 to 8 at the quarter, 47 to 27 at the half and 76 to 50 at the end of the third quarter. When the horn sounded ending the game, Wauconda was still on top with the score being 105 to 72. Glen Peterson did a fine job of playing his first game with the Millermen, and Bill hopes to keep him with the team if possible. The Porkies will be idle this Sunday night, due to the Forester tournament in town, but expect to have a game again the following Sunday. They will replay Wauconda on the 22nd of March in the old gym at M.C.H.S. tiiis will be the game to see, as Bill says, "This Wauconda club has a fine, well-polished team that * is hard to beat anytime, but we will be trying twice as hard the next time we meet them." McHenry, wrestling its last home match of the season, last Tuesday, lost a hard fought battle against a much improved Palatine Team. The Warriors got off to a bad start, but came back ^strong with Chuck _ Green and Gene Hughes both clinching their bouts. At the halfway mark, Palatine was leading McHenry by a margin of 16-8, but the Warriors tightened the gap and tied the match with Gil Mercure and A1 Trendler beating their opponents. McHenry received their last team points when Bob Krickl beat his opponent by points.
