OBJECTIONS ON ASSESSMENTS MUST BE FILED JULY 31 Farmer taxpayers who have examined personal property assessments published this month and feel they have grounds for objection should file a wiitten objection with the county board of review by the end of July. This advice was given by Bert Vandervliet, director of property taxation for the Illinois Agricultural association, the state-wide Farm Bureau organization. 'The 1953 assessments are -be- In addition to the assurance (ing published by townships dur- ~ llest ing July in practically all counties," Vandervliet reported." "Publication serves as a legal notice to the taxpayer." Vandervliet advised farmers to compare their individual 1953 personal property assessments with the figures appearing on their personal property tax schedules. "If any changes were made in the property owner's tax return by the township assessor, or county supervisor/ of assessment, thev will appear, in the publihed list." : . Vandervliet points out that <• if of the fullest net returns on the basis of quafey values, prize lists were increased this year. Cash prizes down to fifteenth place are offered in some classes, with * cash award of $20 to the first place winners in the single classes, and $25 in the pen of three classes. The grand champion and the reserve grand champion in each diiusion of the show will be awarded trophies valued at $300 by the Chicago Live Stock Exchange and the Chicago Traders Exchange. "Farmers should also find out from their county treasurer if the published list may be subject to a multiplier," he said. "It's safe to assume that if your county had a multiplier in 1952, the same multiplier will be applied to this year's assessments." If a multiplier is applied, the tax will be based an a figure perhaps double or triple the published assessment. "Unit values applied to live-' stock and grain, in particular, i have often resulted In assess- j ment levels higher than the j average level of real estate as- J sessments." he said. "This has: happened in some counties where; practically all tax delinquency comes in incorporated cities and towns." , As a general rule, Vandervliet said, personal property assessments, except for cars and trucks, should not. be more than 50 per cent of current market value. And in some counties objections to ally assessments of even 25 per cent of market value may b^ fully justified, he concluded. ^ HERD NAME Joseph s. Handy put on a great act. Re set up a whole bunch of balloons on a muslin backdrop and then took out his pea-shooter. He shot blindfolded, standing on his head, every which way--and broke a balloon every"time! No wonder Handy impressed the ladies. What they didn't know --till the show's end--was that Buck Mulligan was hiding behind the backdrop improving <m Handy's aim with a hatpin. Prom where I sit, we all fat things "put over" on us now aad again. When it's good-naturedfine! But, some folks would like to fool the rest of us into believing it's wrong to enjoy an occasional glass of beer--just because they prefer something else. For real American tolerance neighborliness these people ate simply "off target." ^oc^Kuug. Copy right. /M?
