All yearend prizes were in addition (to awards made previously When suggestions were ' accepted by the company. Staniforth suggested a chanical method which reduces manual verification of various machine accounting functions in the company, thus saving considerable time and money. Smidt's idea which won him the other $200 award advanced a device which makes it possible to prepare large commercial and industrial electric bills more quickly and efficiently. .McLean suggested •& "walkietalkie" to be used to maintain contact between the switch en-v gine crew and the construction office during new construction work at the company's Ridgeland generating station. This expedites assignments andt reduces the cost of tke work.' Roberts devised an ingenious adaptor to be used on the company's multiple meter test boards which facilitates the testing of socket type electric meters. The utility's suggestion system attracted 3,785 suggestions during 1053 of which 1,035 were accepted as useful ideas. To date, returns from Christmas seal letters mailed to residents of McHenry county have brought in $4,295.75 to the McHenry County Tuberculosis association in its campaign to raifte funds for its tuberculosis prevention and control activities. Although only one quarter of the letters have been returned, the response per letter indicates that the final returns will exceed last year's figure. Those in charge are most anxious to increase seal sale funds in order to increase efforts to find all people who have TB so that they can be treated and cured. , RETAILERS' TAXJDB More retail merchants in McHenry are paying sales tax than in any other city in the county, according to figures released by the state department of "Revenue. me_ j A total of 196 stores here paid $21,360.22 in September. Although Woodstock had only 189 retailers, they accounted for $23,623.06. Twenty-seven cities and villages were listed for the county.
