Our mother used to tell us time would flit by faster as we grew older. It's flit as far as we are concerned this week. t/fae&h. Since our last column effort, we had a heckuva good time «t' the testimonial dinner for Ray McGee at Wing and Fin. The next night it was anr other feed and program as the .Junior Chamber of Commerce "Received its charter. Real enthusiasm in that group. Friday, night it was basketball. But. this one wasn't the 3<ind to boost your blood pressure. The Warriors trimmed ^Woodstock 81 to 41 and showed some fine team woi'k in AVinning. " Coach Fuiton likes a spread .of scoring and ic getting his wish. Players aie feeding off mates in best position to -slT&ot. Everybody got off the bench to play for IVMlenry. We are all for that idea. ; The big news in tirfe conference was Crystal Lake's 96 to "84 win over Barrington. Mc- .Henry moved into a tie with -Barrington for first place, a Hspot that not too many experts r figured the Fufton team to ; reach this ytai. „ We think Cliff Fulton has »out-coached several rivals this "season, but expect he will need 9 real magic this week-end. Most of them! were caught on wigglers. Perch fishermen are hauling them out of Lake Geneva pretty regularly. The ice will "not support a car, but is solid enough to hold anything lighter. Salmon eggs, wigglers and small . minnows are the best perch bait. The best bet is to find out what bait is most productive the day you go.. Something very serious has come to our attention. TO SAVE MORE LIVES A new laboratory test, developed by Albert Coons of Harvard Medical school, will enable physicians to diagnose and begin treatment of streptococcal infections within 2 to 3 hours. Former tests for streptococcal infections, which often lead to rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease, took 2 to 3 days. By enabling physicians to begin necessary antibiotic therapy two days earlier, reports "the Health News Institute, we may be able to eradicate the strep infection before rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease d e v e l o p -- d i s e a s e s , w h i c h cause the deaths of about 20,- 000 people each year. The issue at hand may be an innocent mistake in rodent control, but if it is not, whoever is responsible is in for a peck of trouble. 'Nuff said. Carl Rietesel handed us a bit of interesting information the other night. Carl's daughter, Diane, shot a drake mallard at Hebron, November 9 that was banded August 19, 1959 at Perch Lake in Jefferson County, New York. It is quite unusual for a duck to fly across a flyway and then head south. From what we have heard of Miss Rietesel's ability with a shotgun, there was one duck that should have stayed in his own flyway. Education in the proper handling of firearms is the only way to reduce hunting accidents. according to Glen D. Palmer, dnector of the Illinois Department of ' Conservation. Palmer said that seven hunters were killed in 1959 in tragic gun accidents, all the more tragic because they were avoidable. "Let's face it," Palmer said. "Guns are made to kill with, but a gun in itself is no more dangerous than a club,, because a gun cannot pull its own trigger. The man behind the gun makes the mistake, and the only way we can prevent the mistake is through education." DRIVKK8 UNINJURED A car driven by Josephine Zaleski of Huemann's subdivision slid into another auto driven by Edgar W. Nardi of Shalimar as he stopped at the entrance to Orchard Beach about 8:15 o'clock Wednesday morning. Neither driver was injured.
