t iPage Four THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER A. Thursday, February 4, 196Q& Just reading about district and regional basketball tournaments coming along the end of this month and feel that spring can't .be more than a few snowstorms away. The most ridiculous pairing we have seen in a long time has Elgin High playing Marian Central in regional play. Marian belongs in a district meet and couldn't go too far. Their athletic pi ogram is bound to grow, but this isn't the year to toss those kids in with Elgin. . It vvouldn t' seem that any true sports fan would care for such goings-on. Th£ regional will be played at Crystal Lake where seating the crowd is no great problem. McHenry will play the winner of the North Boone district meet, Dundee meets Harvard and Crystal Lake draws Woodstock. Nobody has beaten Harvard this year, but come Saturday night, Feb. 20, we plan to tour up there to see what our Warriors can do about breaking that record. * NICK GROH PINS HIS MAN TO WIN FROM HARVARD Coach Hutchinson Sees Improvement In MCHS Wrestlers The Warriors travel to Elgin this week for a Saturday night game against St. Edward's This is a non-conference game that could be a good one. Nobody can beat either McHenry or St. Ed's without getting up quite a sweat. Over at Libertyville last Friday night, the Warriors ran the home team out of gas after coming from way back in early scoring. The following night on our home tioor Dundee almost turned the tables as the Warriors lost their pattern of play in the last half, blew a good lead and had to prove themselves in overtime. Mike Cr e i g h ton ' came through like a champion in this one. ^ After winning the first two matches, Ken Thoren at 95 lbs. and Dan Kinnerk at 103. McHenry 'fell behind 17-6 to Harvard. Then the never say die of the McHenry ' Wrestlers came to life. Rich Mercure pinned his man at 145 lbs.. Butch Espey edged to a draw in a strong arm battle at 154 lbs., Captain George Vergara won at 165 lbs., and at 180 lbs. Joe Cina came through to tie the. team score at 19 -- McHenry to 19 -- Harvard. With heavyweight match deciding the final outcome, Mc- Henry's determined Nick Groh pinned his man in 3 minutes, 54 seconds to put the final score 24 -- McHenry to 19 -- Harvard. WOODSTOCK UPSETS MERCHANTS 99-93 IN OVERTIME GAME By Mickey Schaefer Last Sunday Woodstock knocked our Merchants out of first place with a 99-93 upset win in overtime. This leaves us with 11 wins and 4 loses in league play. To sum it up, it was too much Jim Judson,. Gib Kurts, and Roger Musser. Kurts was- high point man of the game with 36. Teammates Judson and Musser scored 26 points each. Don Bentz and Dick Graham led our attack in a losing cause with 24 and 20 points respectively. Roger Benson our 6.. 6. center scored 15 points even though he sat out almost a half with 4 fouls. Art Beck hit for 13. . 'This was our third and final meeting with Woodstock, with McHenry winning the other two in close games. Thursday night McHenry travels to Crystal Lake. McHenry (93) G F P TP A- Beck 6 1 4 13 J. Roger Stilling bowled one of the greatest series you will ever see. It was with the Tuesday night group at Tomasello's that Roger started with a 245 game, hit 267 in the second and finished with 204 to total 1716 pins. That's big league bowling, Roger. The following are not from "Anonymous" but sent in by a new reader, Alphonse Dohm: Maybe why the grass on the other side of the fence looks greener, is that they take better care of it? Starting at midnight and ending at 2:30 a.m. this gala event promises to be one of the most outstanding activities McHenry has had in quite some time. Tickets may be obtained at Mark's Sporting Goods Store, Just For Fun Roller Rink, The Pine Tree Tower or any members of the McHenry Roller Skating Club. It is rumored that many so called "Old Timers" who have not skated in many long years are getting together and attending this affair in full force. It should be worth the dollar just to see some, of these youngsters on skates after all these years. So why not get up a group of your own and go skating once again and have a time of your life. OVERTIME GAME FROM DUNDEE Cardunals Throw Scare Into MCHS In 69-66 Battle by Lambert Freund Saturday night the Cardunals of Dundee came to McHenry and really threw a scare into the first place Warriors, but Lady Luck rode with the Warriors as they came out on "top of a 69-66 overtime score. The Family of Edward Lannes *40 Construction of a huge outdoor pool and an outdoor ice skating rink at the Illinois Beach Park north of Waukegan, will be recommended to the Department of Conserva tion. State Senator McClory has announced. "The State of Illinois has a huge investment in the recreation area of the park, but it is only being utilized a small part of the year because of climate limitations," Sen. McClory pointed out. The state is now constructing a 150 room hotel and lodge at the park, Sen. McClory explained, but it won't be used enough unless.year around f a cilities are available for the people of Illinois. Under the plan proposed by Sen. McClory the swimming pool and ice skating rink would be financed by revenue bonds. It was gratifying to members of the McHenry Clean Streams group to see so many new and interested faces at the February meeting, held Tuesday evening at the V.F.W. clubhouse. Since the organization works to keep the Fox river and any stream or lake emptying into it clean and free of pollution, there was considerable discussion on reported violations. Any home owner or business on the river has a responsibility to the community to check any pipe on his property which empties into the river, as only rain water is allowable. The river is a great natural resource and a pleasure to fishermen and boat owners. For this reason, the Clean Streams group hopes to keep it free ot pollution.
