The hospital hourly contains dramas that would make any. radio or television program seem mild by comparison. Memorial hospital's switchboard operator could tell many of these tragic, exciting and wonderful stories if her lips were not sealed bv the ethics of her position. And the housekeeper might tell about the "longest shopping list in town" if she were to discuss all of the things a hospital needs to purchase just tb keep the rooms immaculate, tidy, and perfect for occupancy. Hospital Administrator Berr tram Hanson runs an institution of "many hands and many skills" (this year's theme for National Hospital Week) and must see that the staff contains persons with the training and background to properly run an accredited hospital. Tl:ere are, of course, the highly trained technicians and nurses; and there are laboratory workers,' a librarian, a dietitian, 1 nurse aides, laundry workers, those who do the cleaning, those who operate the maintenance services. And there is a full restaurant in operation in. the middle of the hospital. A restaurant with a difference. It must prepare many special meals for those with-Special needs; and provide it in an appetising manner and with a choice of foods. ,.The bustle back of the scenes is seldom seen by the patient but those unseen workers are busy keeping records of care and progress, keeping supplies in readiness, and equipment in constant order. Hanson says that, "It is important for the community to understand that payroll costs for personnel account for the major part of total hospital costs, and they increase as services are increased. Hanson says, also, that while automation can and does cut personnel costs in industry, it cannot. do so in the hospital to any great extent. Hospitals use machines wherever possible, he says, but most hospital sendees must be performed by people. "Patient care cannot be standardized," says the administrator, "and there is no automation that will take the place of the kind hands of an efficient nurse, or the confident tone of a doctor's voice."
