According to a recent survey by the United States Department of Agriculture, average prices of Illinois farmland rose about 1 percent in the spring of 1959 and then settled back the same amount during the fall and winter. - The U.S.D.A. figures are state averages, but there are i m p o r t a n t v a r i a t i o n s f r o m those overages. For example, much of the 1 percent decline reported since last summer may be, due fo a decrease in number of sales of central Illinois land at extremely high prices -- $600 to $800 an acre. Such sales often involved 80 acres or other relatively small holdings to be added to neighboring farms. Some reporters can see no change in prices for averagegood farms, even in central Illinois. Reports from the northern and southern parts of the state generally show little or no price decline. Land values in southern Illinois are supported by rapidly rising yields and by comparatively favorable earnings-to-cost relationships. In northern Illinois land values receive support from r a p i d l y e x p a n d i n g i n d u s t r i a l and population centers. Twice Told Tales Last Week's Items TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO Taken from the Files of July 4, 1935 Sunday, June 30. was a history maker in McHenry for it was on this date that the first investiture ceremony ever solemnized in McHenry or surrounding territory took place at St. Mary's church at 11 o'clock, when the pastor of St. Mary's parish, Rev. Charles S. Nix, was invested with the symbols of office of papal chamberlin with the title of Very Reverend Monsignor. A cloudburst which threatened McHenry swept over this region Monday afternoon, causing considerable damage to crops and property. There was no wind but the lightning was severe, striking barns and farm property. About a mile south of Terra Cotta the Chicago and Northwestern tracks were washed out and passengers for M c H c n r y were brought here by bus. At Terra Cotta the pavement was a veritable lake, being under water so deeply that motors of automobiles became submerged. It is feared that grain fields are seriously damaged as the heads are 10 heavy that they will be unable to pull up out of the mud. The marriage of Miss Lillian Doherty. daughter of the J. J.
