LEGION URGES FLAG DISPLAY ON NOVEMBER 11 A plea to have an American flag flying at every home in McHenry on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, was voiced this week by Commander George Mrachek of McHenry Post, No. 491, of the American Legion. "In the interest of showing the rest of the world the unity of the American people, every home throughout the land should display an American flag on Veterans Day," Commander Mrachek said. He pointed out that the eyes of the world, and particularly those of the forces of world communism, are constantly looking for any signs of internal weakness which might forecast the downfall of the United States. "We here in McHenry can do our part to help discourage any such thoughts about a weak, apathetic, dispirited American citizenry by flying the Star-Spangled Banner on this patriotic holiday," Commander Mrachek declared. To those who have been reluctant to display a flag because it contains fewer than fifty stars in the field of blue, Commander Mrachek assured, "No American flag is ever obsolete. Regardless of its age, as long as it is in good condition, it may be and should be displayed on all appropriate occasions." REMEMBER ... Our only request is that writers limit themselves to 300 words or less and that all letters have signature, full address and phone number. We ask, too, that one individual not write on the same subject more than once each month. We reserve the right to delete any material which we consider libelous or in objectionable taste.) I would like to voice my opinion ~ on a matter concerning the cruelty of a certain person. Most of the families owning homes on the river, close to town, are familiar with the friendly ducks swimming up and down the river. I, for one, have' been feeding these particular ducks for some time now and I'm sure others Jtiave joined me in keeping them alive and healthy. The other day I was shocked to find one of the white ones shot djrectly through the eyes with an arrow. We immediately notified the sheriff's office to send an officer to* put the poor duck out of its misery. It would eventually have starved to death since it could not see to eat. Who could have done a cruel and malicious thing? If the person is so hungry for a duck, he'll find it buried in the empty lot next door to Springers. This happened last Saturday, Nov. 5.
