Our football Warriors hung >up their togs this week after losing the final game to the boys from Libertyville who tied •with Crystal Lake for the -North Suburban championship. "Coach Mandli, his assistants, -and the entire squad worked Uke all. get out to make the season more successful. The team won two, lost thr^e and tied one. We have seen much worse season's, but had hoped -for a couple of more wins along the line. " i; . Some of the Mandli boys , were outstanding and will 9 surely rate on the all-conference squad. Those who were not all-conference were certainly all-heart as they battled through the heat of August and the mud of November. We lost a good friend this week when George Justen passed away. George and his pal, Holger Pederson, were targets for friendly jabs in this column many times. They made a great team of true .baseball fans. We like to remember being in groups attending a World Series game in Milwaukee and another game in Comiskey Park when George added so much to the fun. He wasn't afraid to joke on himself. ^ " It's * flmhjr feeling we get when gbing paStthe corner and knowing that^ George has gone away. He liad~ more friends than most people can ever .hope for in a lifetime. Our hope now is that they have a major league up there and when. Holger's time comes that George will greet him with a ticket for the opening day of the season. WARRIOR GRID TEAM LOSESTO LIBERTYVILLE Locals Outmatched In 20 To 0 Defeat By Co-Champions Tom Simpson tells us that Coach Tom Parsley of Marian High will be present at the Holy Name meeting at St. 'Mary's next Monday night to jalk a little football and show Smovie shots of games this year. ^Assistant Coach John Kirch- 3berg, a strong addition to Marxian's staff this year, is also -expected to lend his part to the "program. Naturally, the Holy ;Name officers hope to have a |la rge crowd on hand for the 'occasion and promise a good J time. * • | Basketball is bouncing right ginto the picture. Don Beptz ; wants one and all to know that 3 a new team, the Johnsburg »Foresters, has entered the a county league and will play jhome games in the Johnsburg • grade school gymnasium. f This coming Sunday, Novemjber 13, will find the Wonder gLake five at Johnsburg. Game Z time is 2 p.m. * 4 J In order to handle the tough |jo b of financing a team, they Xare going to sell season tickets & at a reasonable figure. That |problem of financing is what • caused the McHenry team to • disband this year. | We understand that Lloyd »Freund will coach the .team. | Players listed so far are: Tom I Oeffling, Bill Oeffling, John 5 Huff, Bernie Schmitt, Loren g Freund, Bob Brennen, Ted | Schaefer, Dick Hiller, Tom | Huemann, Charlie Hiller and S Don Bentz. That should be J quite a team. Watch 'em! The McHenry Warriors were toppled 20 to 0 in a h o m e game last Friday night to end the 1960 football season. The Warriors last game was played against Libertyville, who with this victory, gained a share of the North Suburban Conference title with Crystal Lake: The Warriors were clearly outmatched, but still gave the Libertyville team a ,good fight for two and one half quarters, holding them to a six point lead and threatening their goal twice. The field was like a mud hole and along with the terminating rain the ball was as slippery as the players* this accounting for the fumbles and incomplete passing. Joe Sanford played an excellent game, defensively making nine tackles and-.routing the team high 63.5 for the season. Close behind were Butch Espey and Bob Miller, who throughout the year sparked the defensive line. Libertyville's fine blocking and tackling held the Warriors to 143 yards on the ground while they drummed 169. In the first quarter Bill Joerger scored on a 22 yard end run. The attempted kick was blocked by Bob Fletcher. In the third quarter they scored on a one yard run by Phil Ross after a 71 yard punt return. Finally in the fourth quarter they climaxed a 57 yard drive when Chuck Rimkus recovered their own fumble and dove over the goal. Both extra points were good by Joerger, the conference high point man. The season's record of 2-3-1 does not show the efforts of either Mr. Mandli, Mr. Hutchinson or Mr. Seaton nor that which the team, contributed; bbuutt lloooaKkiinnge at tnhe games one T1 Aft MP Cm defensive squad lost by one or two mistakes and the Warriors could just as well have been fighting for the top berth. HURRICANES OF MARIAN CENTRAL DEFEAT BELOIT Home Game Friday Against Hiawatha Of Kirkland Team Marian Central places its .500 season on the line against Hiawatha of Kirkland in the final game of the year this Friday night. The 8 pim. Veteran's Night contest will be played on the WCHS gridiron. Marian has one other game left -- a November 18 trip to Niles to meet strong Notre Dame. The Hurricanes reaches the .500 level last weekend with a come-from-behind 19-12 triumph over Beloit Catholic. After winning the opener Marian dropped four in a row but since then has won three in a row as the big squad continues to improve each weekend under Coach Tom Parsley's patient tutoring. Good running featured the satisfying win at Beloit where quick thinking by the team enabled it to move ahead with only 10 seconds left in the first half. --RHey Sparkles -- Bill Riley, sophomore, quarterback who sparkled as a runner in this contest, threw the forward to Ed Crowley, star of the week-ago win over St. Mary's of Burlington. Crowley lateralled to Joe Vilmain, 160-pound fullback. He plowed around end to score and Jim Vodnansky, 185-pound Algonquin senior, place-kicked his fifteenth extra point so far this year. After Beloit moved ahead following a blocked punt, Riley ran back the next kickoff 85 yards to shove Marian ahead, 13-12. Riley then guided the squad 75 yards in 10 plays for .the final touchdown. He plunged oyer from the orje-yard CROSSCOUNTRY TEAH WISHES GOOD SEASON Beat Libertyville As Hansen, Thoma And Baur Lead Way Running under very poor weather conditions, the McHenry Harriers captured the first three places in beating a strong Libertyville squad 22-33 at McHenry, Nov. 1. In this final dual meet of the year, Hansen, of McHenry, came in first followed by Thoma, of McHenry, in second place and Baur, of McHenry, in third place. Other McHenry runners who placed-in the scoring were Koerper In sixth place and Foss in tenth place. Roland Koerper, the only Sophomore on the Varsity squad, has shown steady improvement all season and has been finishing third or fourth among the McHenry runners the last half of the season. He, along with Baur, Counley, and Lishamer, Juniors on this year's squad, should furnish a good nucleus for a strong team next year. Today's victory gave the McHenry squad a record of six wins and four losses for the season. JAYCEE BOWLING IS EXTENDED TO INCLUDE GIRLS The McHenry Junior Chamber of Commerce has now extended its original plan for the organization of a youth bowling league and tournament to include any girls who are interested in league bowling. Many inquiries from young ladies, asking why they too could not participate in this sports activity, prompted the action. Present plans call for the same age limitation and group classifications for the girls as w e r e p r e v i o u s l y s e t f o r t h e boys. Due to the excellent response to this tournament, the J a y c e e s u r g e a l l t h o s e who have not yet signed up to do so immediately, for there are just three days left until the starting date Saturday, Nov. 12.
