CALL 385-2880 2-4-11-65 THE TAX PROBLEM "Dear Readers: "Attention Mr. Herendeen and others interested in this hassle called personal property tax. Before I l>egin I would like to thank Mr. Herendeen for his belated suggestions. "I cannot understand why when a tax-of any kind is voted on by our legislators there is no need for a chapge in the Constitution. Let's face it. A law was passed in 1870 for the relief of the farmers of that date in order to make up the difference. If he did not have all of t he cash to meet his taxes then he could "offer livestock according to its value. "Snce then we have graduated from an agricultural society to largely manufacturing. What is personal property? Where do we start and where do we end? The car we drive because of necessity has a tax when we purchase it. There is a vehicle and a state tax, and recently an added sales tax on gasoline. The clothes we wear and the furniture we need in order to live as human beings get older as time marches on, and is supposed to be personal property. A tax is paid when purchased. Any interest we get from interest or dividends is taxed by the federal government. And last but not least, there is the tax on food. This is a hardship on families of more than two with fixed incomes. "As to the elderly, of which I am one, there is no great desire of the majority for special treatment. They, too, are willing to pay a just tax -- if it is just. Why not put a stop to luxuries not needed in the schools such as swimming pools and teaching wrestling and diving in the name of physical fitness? When a housewife has a cut in her budget she has to change plans to fit the budget Those of us who are of my generation can well remember "way back when" and I can assure you that some very fine people -- and smart--got their education from these schools and did their share to make this democracy great. "It's time to stop demanding more and more taxes and I can assure you the need for larger mental institutions would decrease. Also, if mothers can stay home instead of going to work to help meet the expenses we would not be burdened with this large, juvenile delinquency problem. "Remember the fable of the old woman who could not get over the fence. When the fire burned the stick and the stick beat the dog, etc., everything came back to normal and she got home on time. We can't stop progress but let us strike a happy medium. "Mrs. Nettie Sarley Lakemoor" •T> M tetfV' , •/' '\j YMCA FAMILY NIGHT The second family night program for the Lake Region YMCA members and their guests will be held on Friday, Feb. 5. By Anne Ashley (Persons who wish to have help with specific problems may write to Anne Ashley in care of W. L. Gordon Features, 9th floor, Resor building, 37 W. Seventh street, Cincinnati 2, Ohio, sending along a stamped self-addressed envelope.) Q. How can I launder small lace items without the danger of tearing the delicate threads? A. Put collars, cuffs, and other small pieces of fine lace in a jar containing lukewarm suds, shake them around in the jar, then empty it and refill with clear water. Shake this again for a rinse job, and repeat this process until the water is clear. Remove the articles, and roll the lace in a turkish towel until almost dry. Then press gently with a warm (not hot) iron. Q. How can I remedy a pair of slippery new shoes?. A. You can reduce the sliding quality of that pair of new shoes by sandpapering the soles. Or, by rubbing a little linseed oil on the soles. Q. What is a good formula for furniture polish? A. One excellent one consists of two parts of vinegar to one part of olive oil. Put a small amount of this on a soft cloth and rub it into the wood. Brings up a nice, freshlooking polish. Q. How can I remedy the appearance of a felt hat that has been soaked in the rain? A. After letting it dry partially, press out the creases in the crown. Then turn down the band and place the hat in a cool place away from any heat, and let it dry thoroughly. Then reshape the crown, and brush the hat gently. If you perform all this carefully, your hat should be restored to "likenew" condition. Q. How can I make the slicing of butter or margarine into neat squares much easier? A. Fold the paper in which the |Hitter comes over the blade of yoqp. knife and cut with this. It will maljie a smooth slice, and the butter will not cling or stick to your knife, Q. What is the best way to launder black or navy-blue lingerie? v ' A. Add a teaspoonful of bluing to the water, and this will preserve the, dye far longer than laundering in plain water. Q. How can I freshen the air in my living room after it has been permeated with cigar and cigarette smoke by guests? A. Try leaving a basin of water in the foom overnight. Q. What can I do when a fabric is too delicate for the use of drdinary starch? A* Try adding a little granulated sugar to boiling water, and adding this to your rinse water. ,t Q. What can I do when egg whites refuse, to beat stiff? A. i\dd a teaspoonful of cold water and a pinch of salt. Adding a' pinch of baking soda ((While beating also helps, makes it more fluffy, and prevents '11$ faijM $ most itan$jfo? any l?ngtSh, of time. i J I
