Many homes in Holiday Hills were without electricity for a period of about 8 hours giving us just a small idea of what can happen without heat and electricity. We were fortunate indeed when we see what happened in areas like ..Barrington, Lake Zurich, Wheeling and many others who had to leave their homes for Red Ci;oss shelters. Isn't it wonderful "to be nice and cozy in a warm house on these cold winter days? New Cub Scout Den W The Cub Scouts have started another den with Gail Szamlewski as the new den mother. From 7 til 8 p.m., they meet each Monday evening at the Teuber home. Arlari, £)obbs, Karl Hallberg, Phillip Nottoli, Mark and David Ritthaler • and Rjchard Szarrriewski are the new scouts in the den. Den No. 1 also "has a new scout whose name is John Muncy. Blue And Gold Dinner It's that time of ypar again when all of the Cub Scouts and their families gather for the Blue and Gold dinner. • The big day this year. is Sunday, Feb. 7. The place, the American Legion hall in Mctlenry, and the time is 4 p.m. As in the past, £ach. family is asked to bring their own silverware, a meat dish large enough to serve their ' own family, and a dish to pass. Cub leaded Pow Wow • A recent Saturday found Marge and Jack Connell at the Cub leaders pow Wove held in Crystal Lake. The pow wow is a training session for Cub leaders in the various phases of leadership. Jack Connel was the training instructor for the 'ceremonies and skits' session, end Marge took part in the handicraft session. They both came away inspired by the many new ideas they learned. " " ;' ' k Woman's Club The Holiday Hills Woman's Club will hold its next meeting at the ranch house at the entrance of the subdivision on Wednesday Feb. 10. Important business for the evening Will include the election of officers. if any of you have any usable tables or folding chairs that you no longer need or use, they would be greatly appreciated for use at the ranch house which will pow be available for use by the various groups from Holiday Hills. PJtoik! Pink! Pink! Everything looked pink for •the baby shower on Vi Abbink and baby Terri Lynn on Tuesday, Jan. 26. Tricked into coming over to say "Good-bye" to Rev. Nieting and hfs* Sfamily, Vi was surprised to, find "many of her friends gathered to shower her with gifts for Terri. „ On hand to enjoy the surprise were Mickey Walters, Phyl Harper, Gloria Smith, Midge Teuber, Eunice Heise, LaVon Dowhin, Joan Schroeder, Ellen Erickson, _ Earline Boettcher, Irene Weiss, Gerry Breede, Ma (Charlie) Fischer, Renee Jende and myself. Terri Lynn Abbink will be one of the best dressed babies in town. Farewell Tea And Dinner The members of St. John's Lutheran church held a farewell tea for Rev. E. Nieting and his family on Sunday, Jan. 17, between the hours of 2 and 5 ,p.m. During these hours many members of the church as well as friends in the community stopped by to extend their best wishes to the Nieting family. Prior to coming' to Island Lake Rev. Nieting served two parishes in North' Dakota. He came to this area in April of 1956 to a small cement block church on the corner of 176 and Roberts Road. The present church buildings were dedicated ih December, 1957 and the congregation and Sunday school continued to grow under the direction of Rev. Nieting. After preaching • his farewell sermon last Sunday, he and his family left for Wood Dale, 111.,. where he will serve as pastor of Calvary Lutheran church. Pastor William Lehmann of Libertyville will serve as the vacancy pastor until a new pastor accepts a call to the church. It -was my pleasure to entertain Pastor and Dorothy Nieting, Mark, Linda, Theodore and David at my home for dinner on Jan. 25, the Monday evening before they left for Wood Dale. Greetings Belated birthday wishes to little Christine Connell who day to the Boettcher twins, urday, Jan. 30. A happy birthwas three years old last Sat- Mark and Diane, who will be 4 years old on Sunday, Feb. 7 and to Roy Lundelius who celebrates his 12th birthday on Tuesday, Feb. 9. GUEST SPEAKERS SCHEDULED BY KIWANIS CLUB Dr. Kenneth Hatfield was guest speaker at the regular meeting of the McHenry Kiwanis club on Feb. 1, 1965. As this is National Heart Week, the Kiwanis club asked the local doctor to speak on the subject of heart disease. Dr. Hatfield attended the Medical College of Virginia and interned at the University of Michigan. He served his residency at the Medical College of Virginia and the State University of New York. He received a Cardiology Fellowship to the State University of New York At this meeting, Leslie Krieger led the membership in singing. "It was also announced that the" next board meeting will be held on ^Tuesday evening, Feb. 23. * Congressman Robert McClory will speak at the Feb. 8 meeting of the club. On Feb. 15, John Flint will be guest and will ta-lk on National Boy Scout Week. larian Attend the church of your choice Sunday. m Recently .the Marian debating team held a debate tournament. Teams from Crystal Lake Community high school, Dundee high school and Marian participated. After the tourney, Kevin Paulsen, senior at Marian, was presented the "Best Speaker" award. Tryouts for this year's senior class play, "The Sound of Music," were held during the past week. Joseph Grimm will once apain handle the dramatic iipction, while John Forbish will take care of the musical end of the production. Lynne Ann Murray, a senior at Marian, was awarded the Betty Crocker Homemaker pin by General Mills. She is now eligible to compete in contest for the state award. BIRCH SOCIETY PRESETS TALK BY REV. McCREARY % :*:• ' • Whenever the grass looks greener on_ the other side of the fence maybe he takes better care of it than-yw^do of yours! Rev. Allen McCreary of the Zion Christian church in Zior will speak at the Johnsburg Community club on Feb; 10 at 8 p.m. He will speak on "The: Socialist Conspiracy." Rev. McCreary has devoted a great deal of tiijne in the last four years studying the beginning of the American way of life and the dangers confronting that, way of life today. For two years he wrote a weekly column for the Zion- Benton News entitled "God- Man-Goverament" and spoke to various Lions clubs, American Legions and political organizations about Americanism, Communism, and the dangers of Socialism. Rev. McCreary states "that while most people are aware of the^ danger of Communism, it is sad to say that few recognize the inherent danger in a little Socialism." The John Birch society present s.
