HOWARD BRODY Latin II Susan. Farr, senior, and Howard Brody, a sophomore at Mc- Henry High school are among about 200 Latin students from throughout the state selected to participate in the Illinois Latin contest finals at North Central College, Naperville, on May 8. From eight taking part in the district contest from the local high school in late March, five were given ratings. They were Jeff Nellis, Bruce DoMoto and Howard Brody in Latin II, Pamela Parkhurst in Latin III (Virgil) and Sue Farr in Latin IV. From this select group, contest officials chose state contestants by taking those with top grades in district competition. Howard had one of the highest ratings in the state at the district level. In all, about 2,500 students participated. Mr. Merkel died unexpectedly last Wednesday, at the close of the final teaching day before Easter vacation. A large group of boys who had benefitted by his many hours of athletic instruction took up a collection, and brought flowers as they attended his wake in a body. One group included members 6f the Eagles baseball team of the Little League, which he coached for several years, and the other was made up of basketball players. The Plaindealer's most welcome visitor every Monday is tiny Linda Brennan, daughter of our Ringwood correspondent. Linda believes in spreading cheer, and her selection of Monday in a newspaper office is very fitting. This week the pretty little blonde girl brought an attractive post-Easter basket of candy. At Christmas it was holiday cookies, and almost any time of year when weather permits flowers to bloom, she brings a bouquet from the family garden. A few more Lindas in this world could make even the gloomy days worth living. With spring and the beginning of the baseball season, a little note from the Illinois Society for the Prevention of Blindness makes us stop and think. They remind that 30,- 000 Americans who might have seen baseball last year are now blind and can never again watch a double play or a home run. This is the number of persons who go blind each year, yet half of this blindness can be prevented. In addition to the suffering, a quarter of a million dollars of Illinois tax money each month goes to support blindness. It is something each of us would do well to consider when we are inclined to become careless where our eyes are concerned. K. A. F.
