Crestwood, McHenry, was appointed last week by the board of Consolidated School District 15 to fill the vacancy for the unexpired term of Mrs. Naomi Meyer, who resigned. His appointment will expire at the next regular election in April of 1966. by- Mary Einsp&r President Lydia Fenner presided at the April meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary, McHenry Unit 491. Several committee reports were heard by the members. Lauretta Homo announced the first place winner of our annual Americanism essay contest was Alana Parks, a seventh grade student at St. Mary's. David Miller from the Junior high placed second and Rose Ann Adams of St. Mary's won third. The winners will be presented their awards at our May meeting. Mrs. Homo reported a flag was given to the township building and to a TOPS organization from Lakeland Park. Community Service Chairman Pearl Sanders thanked those who helpied entertain the patients at the Valley Hi Nursing- JHgme in Haiftland. Mrs. Sanders requests members to Volunteer to tag for the Salvation Army Doughnut Day in June. Marie. Howe, Elgin Rehabilitation chairman, expressed her appreciation to the members who baked cookies for the recent party at Elgin Hospital. County President Ruth Mrachek, Mary Kantorski, Gertrude Murphy, Delia Freund, Kay Luing, Leslie Luing, George Mrachek, and County Commander Harold Vycital helped Mrs. Howe entertain the patients. A pot-luck supper to be served to honor our Gold Star members preceding our meeting May 17 was announced by Chairman Delia Freund. The auxiliary voted to select new uniforms. We hope to have them in time for the Memorial Day parade. Any member who has an auxiliary hat which does not belong to her is urged to return it to the Legion Home. These hats are to remain at the club when not in use. If any member wishes to purchase a hat they should contact the president or her secretaries. President Fenner'reminds us the disabled war veterans are working in ten Illinois VA and state hospitals completing the 1,500,000 poppies which will be distributed in our state to be worn in honor of the war dead and in tribute to the living victims of war, on Poppy Day. Several thousands of these veterans of three wars have been given employment by the American Legion and its auxiliary in assembling these poppies. McHenry Post and auxiliary will have a corps of volunteer workers distributing the poppies on downtown streets and at shopping centers to receive contributions for the service work of the American Legion and its auxiliary for disabled veterans and their dependents. We hope that everyone will wear a Poppy to commemorate the sacrifices of these veterans. Since 1921, when the first Poppy Day was held, the Legion and auxiliary have expended several million dollars in rehabilitation and child welfare work, a figure far above their receipts in poppy distribution. This assures the public that every ceiit given for poppies NOW! and much more Is spent each year in Illinois for the purpose for which the poppy distribution is held. Past Presidents of McHenry Unit met at the home of Pearl- Pietsch for their April meeting. Henrietta Vycital was co-hostess. The following past presidents attended: Betty Lingenfelter, Lauretta Homo, Frances Matchen, Agnes Schaefer, Ann Thennes, Marge Mikota, Marie Howe, Eleanor Reid, Minnie Meyer, Mary Einspar, Ruth Mrachek, Frances White and Pearl Sanders. The group voted to spend their money collected this year for things needed by the women patients at Downey Hospital. Reba Owen helped serve the refreshments. The County Past Presidents met for dinner in Wonder Lake April 22. Marie Howe, Minnie Meyer, Christine Nixon Pearl Sanders, Frances White,„ Dorothy Diedrich, Marge Mikota~ahd,Agnes Schaefer represented McHenry. Pearl Sanders will act as hostess for the next meeting in July. President Fenner adjourned the meeting and two films were shown on early cancer detection. CHOICE BEEF SIRLOIN STEAK USDA CHOICE SEWAGE TREATMENT FACILITY REPORT ISSUED BY NIPC The Northeastern Illinois Planning Commission has released a survey of current sewage treatment facilities in the six-county Chicago area. The survey revealed the exist ence of 128 separate public sewer systems which serve about 90 percent of the population of the area, now estimated at 6.5 million. Three plants of the Metropolitan San itary District of Greater Chicago together treat the sewage from 83 percent of the population served by sewers. Ten percent of the population is now served by septic tanks, cesspools, and other private facilities. The report points to several problems requiring further study and attention. With the predicted growth of the area (1.5 million more people by 1985 and 3.5 million more by 2000) these problems are likely to reach serious proportions. Some 142 plants now discharge effluent into streams, sometimes without sufficient treatment or dilution water. As consequence, according to the report many local streams are no longer useable for recreation or other purposes.
