JOHN ZAVODNY 885-3159 i Three outstanding seniors in music were recognized for tfceir achievements at the spring music festival last Thursday, in , which about 250 young people participated. Diane Langdon. winner of the band Arion award, began playing oboe in Crystal Lake grade school, quickly- moving up to the concert band. She continued playing in the Crystal Lake band during her freshman year. When the Langdons moved to Island Lake, Diane was accepted in the McHenry high school marching and concert bands. After attending two summers at the University of Illinois Music Camp, she moved to first chair in the concert band and in her senior year was elected by the band members to the position of student band director. She holds seven first place medals and three second place medals in state competition, two being earned for a solo and ensemble in competition last March. Diane has been accepted at the Western Illinois University at Macomb and as she mentioned recently, "I expect to take my oboe along". Sara Borchardt follows in the footsteps of a musical family. Her sister,1 Jean, and brother4, Paul, became well known during their M.C.H.S. days for their vocal ability. Twice Winner Possessed with a large, beautiful contralto voice, she has won two blue ribbons during •the three years she has entered state solo contests in high school. She was also a member of the 1964 state winning girls' sextet. The young lady, who has entertained at various programs in recent years, was named "most musical" in her class by a vote of her fellow students and will be so honored in the 1965 Annual. Sara, a member of the National Honor Society, will enter the University of Illinois next fall. Although she will not major in music, she hopes for a professional career in the vocal field upon graduation. Ray Spohr has been a member of the chorus four years, 'and distinguished himself as the first four-year member of the boys' quartet. The ensemble has been a state winning group for three of the four ^ears. . In addition to his ensemble Xvork, Ray has won a number pf second place awards, some Jfor his solo work in competition. ' A member of the National 'Honor Society, he will enter jMarquette university next fall, where he will be enrolled in the School of dentistry. COUNTY WINNERS OF SCHOLARSHIPS ARE ANNOUNCED Winners of the University of Illinois scholarships in McHenry- county have been reported to Richard L. Tazewell, county superintendent of Schools, who accepted application for these scholarships last February. Five scholarships are available in McHenry county, awarded on the basis of scores made on the ACT examination given last November 7, They exempt the winners from tuition fees for a period of four years. The scholarships are: Special County, Agriculture, Home Economics, Child of a Veteran of World War II, Child of a Veteran of Korean Conflict. For McHenry counfy the winners this year were: Agriculture, Jack David Clark. Wonder Lake; Home Economics, Shirley Ann Wittlief, Marengo; Child of a Veteran of World War I, Maureen Grace O'Brien, Crystal Lake; Child of a Veteran of World War II, Jeanne Marie Kalvelage, Crystal Lake; Child of a Veteran of the Korean Conflict, Richard James Turner, Woodstock. These scholarships can be used only at the University of Illinois and are in addition to the General County Scholarship winners previously announced who can use their scholarship at any of the six state-supported universities in Illinois.
