Anyone wishing to retain membership should send in dues to Box 3, Woodstock, at once. When the town of McHenry held their Centennial July 31 to Aug. 2, 1963, Gilbert Howard was given a badge inscribed "Marshal of the Day". This, along with a whistle he owned, has been given to the society by Joe Schmitt of McHenry. A twisted and carved cane was also given by Mr. Schmitt but he can't give much information regarding it. It has been suggested that it was a souvenir put out at the time the transcontinental railroads were joined at Promontory, Utah, on May 9, 1869, as it bears a pickaxe and mallet used by railroad workers. It is golden colored wood and might have symbolized the "Golden Spike" that was driven to unite the two railroads. This was quite a celebration drawing celebrities from all over the United States. More information, to authenticate the suggestion. Mr. and Mrs. R. O. Andrew of Woodstock have given an 1892 plat book of McHenry county. A photograph postcard of the train wreck in Crystal Lake Sept. 9, 1911, as well as a program of the Gem theatre, listing motion pictures for the week of March 24 and March 30, but no year given, have been donated by Charles E. Och of Crystal Lake.
