Government buildings on the Pacific island of Guam is one of the mysterious I.attc Stones. There are many of these stones on Guam, but their origin is unknown. Government ProvssJas Most New Jobs On Nation's Payrolls Who is providing the most new jobs opening up on the nation's payrolls? According to figures researched by Tax Foundation, Inc., the answer is government; one of every four new jobs opening up on the nation's payrolls is a government job. Record high employment figures showed 64 million on non-farm payrolls at mid-year, an increase of -about 31 million since June, 1965. Of this increase, 756,000 were hired by federal, states and locaL. governments, the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates. The new government workers brought total government employment in June to a new high of nearly 11 million - not including those in the Armed Service or foreign nationals working for the United States overseas. With one of every six payroll employees in the United States now in a government job, the most rapid increase in government employment is not at the federal level. It is at the^ state and local level. State and local government workers have increased from slightly more than five million in 1965 to a current estimated eight million. Federal government civilian workers now just over 2% million, have increased in the same time by some 360,000 including an increase of 192,000 in the past fiscal year alone. In the original President's budget, an increase of only 27,000 was foreoast. The budget for fiscal 1967 anticipates an increase of 51,000. The total cost of all public payrolls is now running, according to the Foundation's estimates, about $5.3 billion a month, or $27 for every man, woman and child in the United States. In 1956, total government monthly payroll costs were $2.5 billion, or $15 per person. New and increased spending programs at all levels of government not only increase the number of employees and payroll costs, but leave very little in the taxpayer's pocketbook. It took about a half century (1902-1952) for total government (federal, state and local) spending to rise from $1 billion to almost $100 billion. But the next $100 billion advance in total government spending -- to $203 billion, to be exact -- was accomplished in thirteen years.
