i • ^ THE MCHENRY PLAINDEALER SERVING THE CHAIN-O-LAKES REGION SINCE 187B* MCCILLOM LAKE NEWS EVE LEVUgQUB S8541I1 RECORDS BROKEN AT SECOND ANNUAL FISHING DERBY Most of the details of last weekend's fantastically successful ice fishing derby have been covered elsewhere in the Plaindealer, but this reporter saved a few gems for the column. When the financial report is completed for the event, the Cullom-Knoll Association will be able to decide whether ground can be broken in the spring for the new youth center. This year's event was covered by all major Chicago and area newspapers, all radio stations and was also mentioned on television. This was a contributing factor in breaking the attendance records. Bigger fish were caught this year, with Bob Freund making a new record of 3.19 pounds, beating Gene Freund's record last year. The derby opened promptly at 9 a.m. Saturday with Chief Earl Murray shooting off a gun and touching the siren on the squad car. Ideal weather conditions both day s also contributed to the success. Ken Betts and his committee did such a terrific job that all names should be in headlines! Ray Lary handled duties at the mike, keeping all participants informed every hour of both days. Others whose services proved invaluable were Bill Gleeson, Bill (Wee Willie) Walter, Ron Godina, Frank Kurth, Len Jensen, Ray Fisher, Dave Scarbrough, and Tom Kacprowicz. Bob Benson of Martin Road (and not a village resident), handled many duties both days and was on the planning committee for the last few months. He deserves extra honorable mention. Our police officers and Clem Wirfs and his group deserve verbal orchids for the efficient handling of traffic and parking. Carol Bateman had her work cut out for her, issuing thirtythree fishing licenses. All food preparation and dispensing was done by Jeanette Betts, Elaine Gleeson, and Gerry Jensen. Their ten crew was Bob Orton, Jackie Fisher, and Val Schiavone who sold refreshments out on the ice. If we have neglected anyone who assisted, it was unintentional, and corrections will be made next week. DEEPEST SYMPATHY To Dorothy Lorch and her sister, Mrs. Doris Granoof Arvada, Colo., on the loss of their father, Carl Fahr, 74, who died last Thursday night after along and suffering illness. Dorothy had been at her father's bedside in Norridge, 111., the day before and was called back Thursday, one half hour' before he succumbed. His wife, Ruth, and two other daughters, Mrs. Violet Detlefsen, Chicago, and Mrs. Mary Parker, Norridge, were also in attendance. Services were held last Monday afternoon at 1 o'clock from the McCampbell Funeral Home, Chicago, and interment in Acacia Park cemetery. Other survivors include seventeen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Mrs. Doris Grano of Colorado is spending the rest of the week with Stew and Dorothy. CONFINED TO VETERANS RESEARCH HOSPITAL Paul Brendle entered Veteran's Research hospital, 333 E. Huron Street, Chicago, a week ago Tuesday, and will probably be confined for a long time, according to his wife Edith. His room number is 1327 and we know that cards and messages would do much to cheer him. Paul requires treatment and medication for a variety of illnesses. In order to visit him as often as possible, Edith was staying for a few days with her sister in the city. We sincerely hope that Paul will fool the medics and be released soon. had been filed with village clerk Carol Bateman. NOSTALGIC NIGHT Being tru& "squares", Jake and I thoroughly enjoyed last week's Lawrence Welk show when he featured music from our courting days.
