It takes something behind the belt for a team to keep qp its spirit and win those big games after such a disheartening season. We still think one big man under the boards would have made this a real tough team to - FEBRUARY 23, fly; Bui WwWh From none other than cur old friend Joe Buch comes a card from Dallas, Texas. Funny how those southerners and warm weather boys find out about a few snowfbikes we have fall an us rugged northerners. So here is what the man says: Dear Earl: I feel you need something to get your mind off the very cold and snowy weather you have had in recent weeks. Perhaps this will help. S8* wishes Joe G. B. The card carries the title '•Hell in Texas" and has a long story of how the devil set up camp in that Great Sate of Texas. Paul got a late start because of a football injury, but kept improving each game. Good team man. Glad to hear from you, Joe. Just heard today that our old schoolmate, George "Pickles" Bohr, died recently. There was a fellow who could have been a great athlete if he had taken sports seriously. There was fun and monkeyshines when'Pickles" was around. Tom was marked from the start of the season as top scorer and other teams soon started to keep him well covered. Tom was sharp at setting 19 plays and began feeding much more than shooting. Could be a fine play maker with a tall collage Coach Hutchinson is taking Jim Laursen to Champaign this weefcesd to wrestle in the state finals. Jim won the state sectional honors in the 180 -pound class after a great season. We are sorrythat Tom Dougherty is not making the trip with Jim and Coach "Hutch". Tom was another great one all season, wrestling in the heavyweight class, but suffered a shoulder iqjmy. Those who saw the Libertyville game say Bob Mauch played a big part in the victory. We think of Bob as an immovable wall in a football line. Now he is giving the basketball team a needed lift. If you look at bowling scores, you will see a whopper this week. Donald Mercure bowled a 669 series, highlighted by a 254 game. That's timber! We appreciate a nice note from Eve Levesque in recognition of our boosting McCul- Lake's big fishing derby. Bear it was a big success --. and we are glad. Those basketball Warriors pulled the upset of the season I McHENRY |mh i j. aar. n. wmI FRI. THRU THURS. THE CLASSIFIEDS - Local Marksmen M Lack of the big manshowed 19 Saturday night against Zion- Benton. All was well while our boys were sinking those outside shots. Then when they got off the mark, they didnt get the second shot off the boards. Hie first six shots taken by Zion went through the net. And the Warriors made five out of their first six shots. I By Bert Hageman WARRIORS UPSET In this past weekends' basketball action, the McHenry Warriors managed to upset the title bound applecart of the Cats from Libertyville with an astounding 70-65 conquest on the losers' court. Then, following this smashing defeat, McHenry returned home for parents' night and bowed to the hard rebounding maroons from the Lake front, 62-47. The victory over Libertyville was just about the sweetest victory ofthe year, as the Warriors defeated the once beaten Cats and derailed their title bound express for good. Hie Warriors experienced one of their better ball handling nights, shot respectably, aid pulled off some key rebounds against a team which had previously buried them by 30 points. The Warriors held a tenuous five to seven point lead throughout most of the second half, when the frigid shooting ofthe Cats began to finally heat up. In the faee of a tenacious press, the Warriors kept their cool and calmly sank clutch free throws and JNLMRSEK IS SECTIONAL MAT CHAMPION By Bill Voeltz Jim Laursen, the first boy from McHenry to take a first place in the state sectionals, is now 25-0-0. Jim, only a junior, wrestled his frst match Friday evening against Bert Imk of Evanston. His quick and agile moves aided him in the 5-2 decision. Then Steve Ojivison of Waukegan wrestled Jim. Again speed and will paw-*? er proved him better as he won 6-2. Finally he took on Kent Liddle of Deerfield in the championship match. Jim got the takedomi, but Kent reversed him toward the end of the period. In the second period Jim escaped but was unable to regain the takedown. In the final period, he rode out Kent to win 4-2. Carl Perrino, also in the tournament, wrestled Ryan Julian of Lake Forest in his first match. Determination caused a change in Carl as he proceeded to pin his opponent at 5:29 of the filial period. In his second match though, Carl wrestled Louis Richards of North Chicago. He lost the takedown by escape twice as he lost in riding time 3-2. In the consolation match he wrestled A1 Gilbert of Deerfield. Carl's opponent reversed him in the match though, as be lost to take 4th place. Others in the tournament were Terry Morrison, who lost 5-3 to Wllford Wells of Antioch in overtime, and Tom Baur, who lost 6-1 to Dennis McCabe of Deerfield. Follow and support Jim Laursen as he travels to Champaign Friday and Saturday to wrestle in the state tournament. key baskets against the scrappy quintet from Libertyville. Kil~ day and Schimke cracked the boards well, while Evans and Camasta handled the floor play. Rapidly improving juniors Martin and Mauch contributed to tiie overall effort, while the McHenry gathering hollered, themselves into a frenzy during the waning moments of the ball game. As in previous victories, this ball game was marked by balanced scoring, a minimum of mistakes, ami consistent rebounding. Slick shooting Bruce Jordan kept the Cats in contention with his steady long and short range bombing, but the inspired team play of McHenry, coupled with a good defensive effort by all hands, assured the orange and black of their second conference victory of the year. During the first half of the Saturday night Zee-Bee game, it looked like the Warriors were once again going to give the fans hysterics in the second half. The Warriors, down by two at half, had consistently scored over the Zee Bee zone with long range shots by Evans and Camasta. However, during the second half, the Warrior effort turned completely sour as the orange and black accumulated most of their 24 game total turnovers. The fourth quarter saw eight minutes of total Warrior collapse, as McHenry managed to garner only six points during the whole period,, During a cold Zion streak in the third quarter, McHenry brought the ball down the floor five times in succession and failed to even, get a shot off. This marked the FORESTERS 115-95 Over Woodstock The Forester basketball team defeated Woodstock by the score of 115-95, February 15th at Johnsburg. Zion dominated both boards with Werner Irvin and Jim Leech controlling the glass and showing the fans some of the most aggressive board play of the season. Craig Hiatt led die maroon scoring and showed the packed gym some fine moves and offensive thrusts against a sometimes sleepy Warrior defense. Woodstock Next This next weekend the Warriors journey to Woodstock for their final North Suburban conference tilt of the year, and the journey to Elgin Larkin the 28th of February when state regional play begins. In other warrior action, the sophomores continued their torrid streak with two squeaker -victories while the freshmen were idle.
