Back Country "Boondocks," slang for the back country, derives from the Philippine word bundok, a remote area of Luzon. (Read about Clarence Darrow's final request as he lay on his deathbed. For the scientific precision of our Ismail portion of the Cosmic Universe makes true scientists regard atheists as juvenile thinkers. So fortify your youth before they leave for college by the "Logical Proof of God.") By George W. Crane, Ph. D., M. D. CASE B-590: James Watt, aged 75, is a Scotsman who came to America at the start of this century. He studied at Moody Bible institute and then conducted revival services for many churches in Canada and the U.S.A. In late years, he has resided at Cedar Lake, Ind., where he has been a skilled carpenter. But on Sunday, he travels 40 miles each way to come into our Chicago Loop to conduct services for 150 Skid Row alcoholics. This is his hobby, conducted at his own expense. He also takes a dozen into a restaurant after the services for a free bowl of soup. Then he walks over to the Chicago Temple to attend my Bible class that starts at 12:30, following Dr. Pierce's sermon. So I always ask him to give us a quick report on any interesting problems that he has encountered on Skid Row. One Sunday he mentioned having met the former law clerk of Clarence Darrow, who was the opponent of Bryan in the Tennessee controversy over evolution. This law clerk was a graduate ' of a Chicago Law School and a brilliant man, but he had be- M come a chronic alcoholic. And he reported to Scatty Watt that Mr. Darrow had hastily urged him to summon three clergymen to his room as he lay dying. Soon a Catholic Priest, a Jewish Rabbi and a Presbyterian minister arrived. •Gentlemen," Clarence Darrow is said to have greeted them, "I have written and spoken many things against God and the churches during my lifetime. "Now I wish I hadn't! "For I realize it is entirely possible that I may have been wrong. "So I should like to ask as a final favor that each of you intercede for me with the Almighty." Which the law clerk states that those three clergymen did. Scotty Watt then told my Sunday School class about the two men fishing in the St. Lawrence river, well above Niagara Falls. One was an avowed atheist but the other was a Christian. Their rowboat was anchored while they fished, but the anchor began to slip and soon they were moving down the swift current. When the atheist saw their plight, he yelled to his companion: "God help us, man! Bend to the oars or we'll go over the falls?" By desperate rowing they finally returned safely to shore. Sut the Christian was puzzled and asked his companion: "I thought you were an atheist! So why did you call on God?" "Well," he replied, "atheism is O.K. for calm waters but not when you are approaching Niagara Falls!" A lot of ignorant folks and even some Ph. D. instructors with a veneer of scientific understanding, try to rate headlines by their atheistic mouthings. But the best educated men of all ages have had a wider Cosmic Perspective and realize the laws of scientific efficiency undergird not only this Earth and our Solar System, but the entire universe. So send for my booklet "The Logical Proof of God," enclosing a long stamped, return envelope, plus 20 cents. Use it to fortify your children long before they leave for college! (Always write to Dr. Crane in care of this newspaper, Qnclosing a long stamped, addressed envelope and 20 cents to cover typing and printing costs when "you send for one of his booklets.)
