4> SECTION I - McHENRY PLAIN DEALER - MARCH 9, 1967 .• < Warriors Lose 70-69 Battle In Overtime To Favored Elgin Larkin In Regional Tourney ., By Bert Hagemam The jinx which has plagued Warrior basketball teams for years once again reared its.ugly head this past Tuesday, February 28 when the host Larkin team won 70-69 in overtime. The jinx is that the orange and black can never seem to get by an Elgin team in regional play. The Warriors always have played outstanding games against the Elgin teams but never quite seem to get over the hump. Two years ago it was Elgin which defeated McHenry in an overtime. This year it was the Royals of Larkin who turned the trick and ended the Warrior season with a crushing JIM IAURSEN REPRESENTS MCHS IN ST&15 MEET ' ^J1 s - '•* ^ ^ a. 4 ( « / • \ . v . ||§|g By Bill Voeltz Jim Laursen, McHenry's 180-lb. junior, traveled down to the State Wrestling Tournament in Champaign. Thus, Jim's season record is 25-1-0, and he will most likely return next year as an important and very impressive 180-lb. wrestler. The chances are that you haven't but if you own captive ducks that resemble wild mallards in size and color, you must, according to a new federal regulation. The regulation affects shooting preserves operators, game breeders, dog trainers, field trial operators, farmers and anyone having tame mallards. Within 60 days after March 1, the rear toe on the right foot of all captive mallards must be removed. This regulation does not apply to Rouen, Pekin, Muscovey and other domestic ducks that do not look like mallards. Young ducks hatched after March 1 must be toeclipped before they are a month old. Mallards that are not toeclipped will be considered wild ducks and federal laws on hunting and possession will apply to them. The marked foot must remain with the duck until it is prepared for cooking. A mallard's hind toe is not well supplied with blood, is insensitive,. and is of little use to it. The wound heals within a week or so. A wire cutter or sharp knife may be used to remove the toe. I • I - SILVER DOLLAR SPECIAL -1 • Brilliant Uncirculated I • 1878 -1923 $1.95 each \ (with this adv.) In the first half, threatened repeatedly to pull away f^ln the Warriors and at one time held a nine point lead. However, their muscular center^ Hulke, drew his fourth personal foul in the second quarter, and his replacement fouled out early in the third quarter. With the hight distributed a little more evenly, the orange and black took heart, and aided by cold outside shooting by the Royals, Tom Evans led the McHenry charges into a one point lead by the end of the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, with three Larkin regulars cm the bench with five fouls, the Warriors pulled into a four point lead with 1:43 re* maining on the clock. The Royals had been frantically trading fouls for baskets with McHenry, but the Warriors had been capitalizing on the charity line and held this slim margin. It was then that Larkin began committing intentional fouls every time McHenry brought the ball up the court. A1 Lettow, burly senior forward, was thrown out of the game for committing a flagrant foul, and then coach Sherline called two consecutive time outs while McHenry players anxiously awaited the two charity tosses. Both attempts missed, Larkin scored, fouled again and McHenry missed on the one and one. With only seconds remaining, the big blue tied the score and sent the contest into overtime. Tim Martin got the Warriors a clutch bucket, but once again the Royals fouling tactics succeeded and the McHenry team missed another charity toss. With only seconds remaining, Tom Evans was forced to foul forward Stanford (HI a semi-breakaway basket attempt, and he sunk the second of two throws with only five seconds remaining on the clock. The last Warrior desperation shot went off the front of the rim, and jubilant Larkin followers swarmed onto the floor, while the disheartened Warrior fans made their way slowly towards the exits. The orange and black gave a fine effort, there is no mistaking that. They didn't have the C.I.IF. STATE S E SUNDAY The semi-finals and finals "of the C. O. F. SO I HEAR - - • muscle power to cope with Larkin's brute strength under the boards, but they acquitted themselves in fine fashion with fine outside shooting and team play. Seniors Clarence Sossong, Phil Schimke, Pat Camasta, Paul Kilday, and all conference guard Tom Evans have played their last basketball game for the Warriors. These seniors, and the juniors on the ball club, did not have to be ashamed of their performance; they gave a tremendous effort and went down scrambling in their final effort of the season. All basketball action is not over however, as both sophomore and freshman squads entered tournament action this past weekend. Results will follow in next weeks column. Even with all this snow, remember, the golfers, tracksters, and Fellows like "Red" Winkel are reading the sports pages with more interest now that big league baseball teams are in training. Sports writers are getting warmed up to the task this week and make us wonder how the teams are going to find a place for all the sure fire prospects in camp. Most of those rookies look great each spring until the old pitchers start to curve 'em. Things are looking up for our White Sox. since they got a guy named "No-Neck". Last year we had too many "No- Bat" guys on the payroll. The Sox have so many first basemen and second sackers that Manager Stanky may have to ask for another rule change to make all opposing batters hit to the right side of the infield. Stanky may have something in his proposed rule change to allow a pinch hitter to bat more than once in a game. But, now watch for somebody to ask for a rule allowing a relief pitcher to go in and out and in again. Basketball fans in this part of the state will have all eyes on North Chicago as they move toward the state championship. The Warhawks beat Waukegan, ranked second in the state, in what most fans call an upset. Observing how Waukegan squeaked by their games at the end of the season made some of us wonder how Waukegan held their high rating. We would like to beat the pants off North Chicago in North Suburban play, but now wish them well in tournament competition. We haven't had much ballyhoo on the C.O.F. state basketball tourney this year, but hope to meet a large crowd in the MCHS gym next Sunday for the championship battles. By Bert Hagemann On February 27, the Warrior thinclads opened their 1967 track season in Crystal Lake fieldhouse against the host Tigers. The Warriors, who have been working out for a few weeks, went down to defeat, 73-35. Both varsity and froshsoph squads competed, with the young Warriors pulling off a 64-45 victory. In varsity competition, John Todd won the 50 yard dash in 6.0, while Bob Steffan followed closely in third place with a time of 6.1. Chuck Neubauerwon the 880 yard run in 2:11, While senior Carl Johnson pulled off a victory in the 50 yard low hurdles. Other Warriors who finished in the money were Mark Alderson, 2nd in the 440 yard dash, John Todd, 2nd in the 50 yard low hurdles, Bob Steffan, 3rd in the 220 yard dash, and Will Stahl, 3rd in the two mile run. Senior Bob Wahls pulled off a second in the pole vault, clearing 11'6", and the McHenry one mile relay team ran an exciting race in finishing second. Due to sickness and the fact that all participants are not yet out due to winter sports, Warrior showings in the shot put, high jump, and relays were not up to par. As winter sports draw to a close, Coach Don Seaton will soon have all hands available for better showings in the upcoming meets. The little Warriors showed Must remember to. ask for a new picture of the MCHS cheerleaders who lead the cheers for our wrestling team. In fact, wrestling is the only sport in school that can boast such a record because the other sports are either champs one year or losers the next. Again, wrestling owes much to the effort of its coach, Mr. William Hutchinson, who diligently is there every night working to improve the boys. Also another note of praise goes out to the fine work done by the cheerleaders this season. These cheerleaders, Debbie Samen, Charlene Glosson, Connie Sallman and Carol McMillan have done much to improve team morale and spirit. Be sure to follow the wrestlers again next season. So Long!
