X. Modern fiathroom Features New Decorated Fixtures a 'roper"Planning Comes First Not so Very long ago, the bathroom-Was strictly utilitarian. It had three basic fixtures, a couple of towel bars and a medicine cabinet. When it came to decor, there was little or none. Now all this has changed. Bathrooms have come into their own, says the Plumbing- Heating-Cooling Information Bureau. They're, bigger, and they have real style. And, they can be decorated to fit the general decor of the rest of the house, thanks to a new and greater variety of fixtures and accessories. Among recent trends that are catching on fast are decorated bathroom fixtures, with authentic classic as well as modern designs. Less than a half-dozen years ago, such fixtures were available only as hand-painted custom items. Today, they are widely available from many manufacturers, in many designs. Design names indicate style variety -- for instance, "Tangier," "Provincial," "Wheatland," "Early American," "Victorian Garden." The designs are fired into the fixture and do not wear off. Decorated fixtures include lavatory bowls, water closet seat tops and tanks. To complete bathroom decor, there are matching patterns in tissue holders, faucet handles and even towels and wallpaper. In keeping with this trend to elaborate, opulent bathrooms, many manufacturers of faucets and other bath accessories are making luxury items. There are gold-plated faucets, soap dishes, tissue holders, plus faucets shaped like swans, mermaids,'dolphins and a host of other figures. Decorated fixtures are somewhat higher priced than those in white or plain colors, but their growing army of fans think they're worth it. Need Storage? Overhead Areas Solve Problem Need more storage space in the home? Put dust-collecting, unattractive overhead areas to work. Wide-open spaces that can be prettied up and made functional range from neglected places such as tops of kitchen cabinets, or high-up areas in closets, to an unfinished attic. Higher reaches of the kitchen are notorious for space waste. Often, the wall cabinets have dust-catching tops. These areas can be easily built up to the ceiling by adding a framework and enclosing it with sides and sliding doors of woodgrained hardboard. The increased cabinet space is practical for storing seldomused utensils. Put high-up areas in clothes closets to work by installing perforated panels, now available in woodgrained walnut finishes, over framing. Store boxes and other items on shelves placed on brackets that fit the perforations. An unfinished attic offers many possibilities, from organized storage to extra room. A free plan, AE-408, "Remodeled Attic," is available to all who request it on a postcard mailed to Home Service Bureau, Box B, Chicago, 111. 60690. BENDING NAILS? To make hammer-and-nail Jobs go more smoothly, check the hammer. Grfease, oil, dirt or paint on the face of a ham- ^ jner can cause nalls to bend, or cause the hammer to glance off the nailheads. DECORATED FIXTURES for the bath come in a host of classic, floral and modern designs. Floral motifs are among the most popular. Photo from Rheem. In kitchen remodeling, the chief aim is usually for a combination of more work-saving efficiency with more attractive appearance. No matter how much time and work are saved, the homemaker knows she'll still be spending a lot of time in the kitchen. Naturally, she's interested in the charm and personality of her "headquarters." Good planning is the basis on which all else rests. Plan it carefully, organize it thoroughly -- and the modernized kitchen will be both a smoothly- running workshop and a setting for whatever decorative effect the homemaker prefers. Pour widely-used kitchen layouts are: The one-wall, where appliances, cabinets and countertops are placed along one wall; the corridor, where they are placed along two facing walls; the U, where the work area forms a U; and the L, where two adjoining walls are used. Of these, the U and L shapes are generally considered more efficient. A well-planned kitchen contains a refrigerator-freezer center for food storage, a range center for cooking and a dishwasher-sink center for clean-ups. In addition to the appropriate appliances, each center should have sufficient cabinet and countertop space,, so supplies can be kept where they are used, and work can be done at that spot. Since most kitchen walking is done between refrigeration, cooking and clean-up centers, it's best to locate appliances-- refrigerator-freezer, range, dishwasher -- in a triangular pattern: each appliance set at the point of an equidistant triangle. Modern appliances bring new advantages that add to the working efficiency of each kitchen center. A large-capacity, no-frost refrigerator-freezer will hold an average family's food supply for a week, saving trips to the market. No-frost feature ends messy defrosting. New ranges offer greater capacity and cooking efficiency. Many models are available with double ovens and separate temperature controls. Automatic timers and temperature controls on electric ranges are time-savers, since they eliminate pot-watching and check-ups on cooking progress. Automatic dishwashers save time by taking over the entire job of dishwashing. Which Siding? Selection of a new siding for the home should include consideration of cost, appearance, protection, durability and home value. While initial cost is a big factor, the question of future maintenance expense should also be studied. For attractive appearance, the decision may depend on personal preference, architectural style of the home, type of sidings used on neighboring homes. Protection and durability involve resistance to weather, fire and vermin. A siding that meets these standards will, usually, also increase home value.
