SINCE 1875 County Historical Society Holds Fourth Annual Meeting The fourth annual meeting of the McHenry County Historical society was held Monday, May 8, at the, Opera House, Woodstock, with 130 persons in attendance. Before formally opening the meeting, a flag ceremony was held, with Mrs. Charles Bal<- lard, Americanism chairman of the ladies auxiliary Of the Woodstock American Legion post, presenting a table-size flag to the society. On behalf of the board and the members of the society, it was accepted by Mrs. Dorothy W. McEachren, president of the society. Auditor's report, by Herbert Harrison, of McHenry and read by Treasurer Henry F. Nell, Jr., of McHenry, was given, stating a balance on hand of $703.62 for operating expenses with a savings account of $1766.90, of which $666.75 is earmarked for the building fund. It was placed on file for inspection by members. Membership report was given by Miss Edith Bohn, secretary, showing 480 individual memberships at $1 per year; 81 Kiemberships at $5.00; 7 life memberships; 34 organizations at $5 and six businesses at $15, a total of 608 memberships. There was a gain of fifty-six new members at $1 per year and ten at $5 during the past year. It was stated that the board of -directors had decided to drop all memberships that had not been paid up for the.year 19§6- 67. Dues for the year 1967«68 are now payable. The president said that the biggest problem before the society was to raise funds for an adequate fireproof building and that professsional fund raisers had been consulted. Their advice was that the society is not quite ready to launch such a campaign. More information should be gathered as to potential givers and if a building costing approximately $60,000 were to be considered, at least $100,000 should be the goal set to adequately finance it and maintain it after it was built. REGISTER ITEMS Miss Lura Wandrack, Woodstock, reported that over 3,100 items had been accessioned, ranging from one newspaper clipping to a log cabin. She had not yet reached items that were temporarily stored in a barn and on shelves waiting to be accessioned. She was given a hearty round of applause for the tremendous job she has done in registering these many items. Work is proceeding in getting a boulder to niark the site of the first settler's cabin, that of Samual Gillikan, at Algonquin. She stated that the earliest map in the archives of the society showed that the symbol for a dwelling was at the corner of the present Route 31 and the Algonquin-Cary Rd. and also a symbol showed on Gillilan land further to the east. Miss Lura Wandrack was called upon to tell how her father took her up on the hill and showed her & hollowed out rectangle; which looked like a half basement, with good size stones acting as a sort of foundation. There was rubble and debris, still in the depression showing a house or cabin had stood there at one time. He told her that was the first home of the Gillilans. She said that as a child she and her playmates used to go there and pretend they were the only whites around and fight off Indians. The f President explained! there had been a question as to which was the first home and that if any one had actual proof as to which was the first, the society would welcome such proof as to which was the first, proof. FRANKLIN B ANNUAL PICNIC It was announced a picnic will be held again this year as the last one met with such pleasure on the part of those attending they requested it be repeated.
