Professional help from movers, Realtors and financial institutions is invaluable during the stress of a long distance move, as is an organized approach to the countless problems which arise. This article deals with a few of the items that just might have been forgotten on that seemingly-endless list of "jobs to do at moving time." Your youngster's report card or school transfer letter should include the principal's name and the complete address of the school, so his new school can obtain rapidly a full transcript of records. Remember to get your W-2 forms from your last employer for tax return purposes ... also ask for a report of how much social security was withheld, for possible refund purposes. When you're, transfering from one Office of the same company to another, keep accurate records when spending expense money provided - any excess must be reported as income at tax time! Your automobile presents several problems when moving to McHenry County. Your title must now be transferred to, and registered in the state of Illinois. To effect this transfer with a minimum of red tape, you should produce your title, your bill of sale, your automobile registration card, and your current driver's license. To drive in Illinois, you must be able to prove financial responsibility in the following amounts in ease of accident: $10,000 for death or bodily injury to one person; $20,000 for death or bodily injury to more than one person; and $5,000 for damages to property. If a bank or finance company has a lien on your car they may hold its title, and they must give their written permission before you register the vehicle in another state. Another good idea is to review all of your existing insurance policies with your company or agent before you move, to guarantee continuing protection during and after the move. If you just sold your house, your fire, theft, homeowners liability, and other policies may have been cancelled, or your existing policies may lose some or all of their coverage. Insurance men recommend two ways to maintain protection while moving: nearly all risks are covered by the "trip transit insurance" offered by trucking firms for some 50 cents per $100 of coverage; and have your insurance man arrange with a representative in McHenry County, for a binder on the policies you will need immediately. This will protect you until actual policies become effective. If you now have Blue Cross and Blue Shield, you should arrange for a policy transfer through your present organization. Your new employer, if he has this program, may pay all or a portion of your premiums, or he might wait several "trial" months before paying anything. You may keep up your payments in the interim, or may have to adjust to a new schedule of payments to insure that this important coverage does not lapse. Ask your present doctor if he can recommend a colleague in the McHenry County area, a>id, in any case, you should get ( or arrange for the forwarding of) your family's medical histories. These consist of records of past treatments, illnesses, innoculations, etc. Illinois pharmacists are registered to practice in this state only, and you might have trouble filling out-of-town prescriptions, so it is also a good idea to bring along a supply of your prescription drugs in sufficient quantity to last until you -see a new doctor. A validly written will may be probated in any state, but problems may arise regarding travel of executor, questioning of witnesses, and guardianship or trusteeship provisions. If any changes are necessary, they should be made with the help of a competent attorney who knows Illinois law.
