But this county's name nevertheless has a proud historic origin that began with the Blackhawk War in 1831-32. Hie process of tracking down the origin and genealogy of Major William McHenry, after whom the county was named by the state legislature on Jan. 16, 1836, was a long one that Involved library research in Chicago, Rockford, Woodstock and Harvard, as well as a big assist from the Illinois State Historical library at Springfield. The job was done by Lowell Nye, editor of the History of McHenry County, a book of more than 900 pages planned for distribution in August, 1968. What tipped off the frenzied hunt was the word that a James McHenry was secretary of war, serving under the last days of George Washington's term as President and into John Adams' term, the second President. James McHenry served from 1796 to 1800. Mr. Adams dismissed him when he and James McHenry did not see alike on a policy question. But James, it turned out, was not relative of "our*' William McHenry. James did have a son, John, and the Rockford Public library didn't know what happened to John. SITE OF ANTHEM Fort McHenry, a hallowed national monument looking down an the Baltimore, Md., harbor, was named after Secretary of War James McHenry. It was built between 1794 and 1805. ft was here where Francis Scott Key, an American, watched the shelling from the deck of a British ship, saw the American flag flying at dawn, grabbed a letter from his pocket, and dashed off a poem he called "The Defense of Fort McHenry." Hie four-stanza poem was Newt Abmut Our'$etvtcl>men LONG BINH, VIETNAM (AHTNC)-Major Frederick D. Hartmam, son of Mrs. Dorothy M. Hartmann, 1803 W. Davis Avenue, McHenry, receives the army commendation medal during ceremonies near Long Binh, Vietnam, May 20. Presenting the award was Colonel John B. McKinney, commander of the 2nd Signal Group. Major Hartmann received the award for meritorious service while assigned as instructor and chief of the telephone committee at Ft. Monmouth, N.J., from March 1966 to January 1967. Major Hartmann is chief in the Telephone Management office of Headquarters Detachment, 2nd Signal Group. He entered the Army in July 1956. The major graduated in 1950 from Crystal Lake Community Ugh school, and received his BJ5. degree in 1955 from the University of Illinois, Urbana. He received his commission through the Reserve Officers' Training Corps program at the university. Ms wife, Harriet, lives at 103 Marlow Place, Neptune, N.J. All this is from "Forts in America," a book by Harold L. Peterson, on file at the Rockford Public library. There was word, too, that Francis Scott Key is a great, great, uncle to the McHenry County Clerk, Vernon Kays. A family tree chaft at the home of Vernon's brother, John, in Ottawa, shows their greatgreat grandfather, William Kays, as being the brother to the father of Francis Keys, who wrote "The Star Spangled Banner." William was the member of the family who changed his name to Kays. Whether Keys was a grammatical mis-spelling of Key, orthe real name of someone else, is not known. Getting back to Major William McHenry, he was born Oct. 3, 1774, and died Feb. 3, 1835. IN HIS HONOR He came from Kentucky to Illinois in 1809, locating in White County, says the Illinois State Historical society Journal of 1913-1914. William was "captain in the War of 1812, and in the Black Hawk War of 1832, werving in the latter as major of the 'Spy Battalion' and participating in the battle of Bad Axe. He also served as representative in the first, fourth, fifth, and ninth General Assemblies and as senator in the sixth and seventh. While serving in the House, he died in 1835, and was buried at Vandalia, then the State Capital. McHenry county, in the northern part of the state, was named in his honor." The State Historical library sent a facsimile of a page from the "Illinois Advocate," a daily newspaper at Vandalia dated Feb. 4 1835, containing this brief item under Obituary: "In this place at his boarding house, Major William McHenry, (me of the Representatives from White county, aged 65 years (that would be age 60). His merits are too well • known to need praise from our hands." Since he died Feb. 3, this could have been a polite way of saying "We didn't have time to get more information." Watch for other details. Complete Island Changes The old swimming hole has been replaced by the backyard pool. Pools of all sizes and shapes are available to the home-owner today. Whether it be a wading pool with a depth of 12 inches or an Olympic size pool, there is a certain pride of ownership in having your own pool. There is the advantage too, of knowing where the children are and that they are safe. But, are they? Your pool, in addition to affording you many hours of pleasure, can also be a source of a lifetime of regrets. No matter how many safety devicesyouinstall, how high a fence you build or how good a set of safety rules you devise. THIS POOL CAN BECOME A KILLER! In fairness to yourself and others: 1. Have swimming supervised at all times. 2. Limit the number of swimmers at any one given time 3.
