HERE AND I RfMfMKR BY THC OLD TIM** i That plump, healthy, happy youngster may grow up to be a fat, unhealthy, unhappy older child, and later into a fat adult who is prey to all of the physical ailments that are a part of obesity. Faulty eating habits started in early childhood often are the cause NEW BUSINESS The Essex-Costello Real Estate agency has opened its doors at 3717 W. I POMT CARE erne* MOTHERDSO T..H. IM* I Be fPise Shop In McHenry of overweight adults in later life, savs Today's Health, the magazine of the American Mctlical Association. , All too many mothers, with the best of intentions, nag their small fr\ into eating more than thev want to eat. The healthy, fat b:il>y xvho remains chubby as lie grows into pre-school and first grade vcars bccomes less attractive as an individual. And the habit of eating more calories than necessary is likelv to remain the rest of his life. The parent is not the one to decide whether the child should lose weight, how he should lose it, or whether he should continue to remain "pleasingly plump," says Today's Health. The doctor should be consulted. If it fits your doctor's counsel,, here are some tips to help your youngster lose weight-- • Weigh once a week and keep track of the weight. Use the same scale and wear approximately the same clothing. • It isn't necessary to cut out all desserts and snacks, as long as their calorie count is included in the daily total. Fresh fruits are good for snacks. • keep a supply of raw carrots, radishes, celery sticks and pickles for more snacking. Tomato juice or clear bouillon can serve for drinks. • Cut out rich salad dressings; instead use vinegar and lemon juice. • Trim fat from meat, take it easy on-the butter, substitute skim milk for whole milk. But be sure to get sufficient Vitamin A from fruits and vegetables. The most important factor in helping the obese child to reduce poundage is to handle it naturally. Don't make a point of telling the child he is on a reducing diet. Just serve the meals naturally and as a matter of course. Avoid nagging the child about his diet. It will only make him rebellious and more inclined to snack on the sly. Fishermen California, with $49 million in gross receipts, led all states in receipts from commercial fishing in 1963, according to a report from the Census Bureau based on the 1963 census of commercial fisheries. THE WEEK'S LETTER; "What do you think when you ask to be treated as a 14-yearold and your mother says 'no'? The other night, I was invited to go with my girlfriend to an auditorium to hear some famous groups play. I asked my mother if I could, and she •aid that I wasn't old enough.. I told her that if people didn't think kids were old enough to attend these affairs they wouldn't have started them, I also told her that my girlfriends' mother thinks a lot of her kids too, and if she didn't think they were old enough tq go they wouldn't be going. She replied that she didn't care what other mothers do or think. I think that, if my mother is afraid for me to go out into the world and attend affairs such as these, then I might as well not even be allowed to grow up. What do you think? OUR REPLY: You should begin to establish a better relationship with your mother. Talk to her about the things you will be allowed to do and at what age you will be allowed to do them. Your mother means it when she says that she is not too Hbneerned with what other parents think or do. This has nothing to do with whether other parents are right -or wrong. If is your mother's responsibility to do the right things for you -- and the right thing for you is not always the thing you want to do. Why not ask your mother to take you to some play or program? 0 you hovo a loenogo problem yew woiri to dlttuit, or an c&torvatian to rnok. oddrvw you latter t. FOa AND ABOUT TEENAOHB. I have seen him make horseshoes, buggy wheels., I watched him shoe horses, with the forge bellowing black smoke as he seated them with tongs and put them quickly into the water for tempering. The depression days were very harsh and sometimes the wage got to 50c per day (hard to believe) but groceries were very reasonable and we had chickens, a large garden, and a cow. Mother sola eggs, milk and butter. My children have never seen this side of life. I remember water witching with a green peach or willow branch. The place we lived was so rocky we had to go a half mile before we hit water. It was cold and good, and it is stfll there today, although the old house ic gone. We canned vegetables and fruits and butchered hogs. On cold and "snowed in" nights, those quilts made from an array of thins* sure felt heaVy, but food. When we awoke, Jack roet had paid a visit and the tterns on the glass door were utiful and never the same. IN McHENRY C (Smd tjitfiSiMltom Mi catvnn ts Ik* OM nmac. tm W, fawMty 40*01.)
