Dr. Niles and his fellow Rotarians are automatically members of Dr. Waugh's famous "League of the Golden Pen." It is one of the quickest and most effective methods by which to harness our idealism and help bolster our wonderful Republic with its unique "free enterprise" system, So.gothou and do likewise! Discuss this at Sunday School. By-George W. Crane, Ph. D„ M.D. CASE D-582: Dr. Norwin M. Niles is the new president of the Indiana State Dental association. As the banquet speaker at a recent dental convention, I had the pleasure of sitting beside Dr. Niles during dinner. He is a man who harnesses idealism and puts his constructive ideas into action. For example, he is an enthusiastic member of the Garrett, Ind. Rotary club. "Dr. Crane," "he bagan, "it was abhorrent to me to read about the campus riots here in America and the draft card burning, when our patriotic young men were dying in Viet Nam. "So I suggested to our Rotary club that we prepare a special invocation at each meeting which would include the name of one of the young men from our area. Each week we use a different name. '•We type this prayer and invoke God's blessing on this young man. "Then I append a few paragraphs in which I tell him how much we business and professional men at home appreciate his valiant stand in defense of our country. "After I sign my note, then I pass the sheet around so every member of the Rotary club can add his signature, plus a word to describe his vocation, such as •Banker', 'Salesman', 'Teacher', etc. "Then my secretary mails it to the boy in Viet Nam. "And we have had many fine replies from those dedicated fellows who tell us it is nice to know that the home folks are so solidly behind them." SERVICE CLUBS, N.B. All our service clubs could profitably follow the example of Dr. Niles and his Garrett Rotary club. For while beatniks and Communist- inspired campus riots are going on, those men in military service thus receive tangible proof of the solid support of the better citizens back home. Such letters, too, will help build up more respect for our wonderful "free enterprise" system that gives us far more advantages than Socialism and Communism. Recently I mentioned the "League of the Golden Pen" which Dr. Karl Waugh started at Beloit college. When his students, buoyed upward with zeal to perform illustrious social service, asked Dr. Waugh how they could do this while still marooned on the college campus, he invented the "Golden Pen" project. Tempt some fourteen-year-old boy into going for a joyridc. Oh, he could be a good kid -- just weak. And taking your car might be the first time he's ever broken the law. But the minute he hops behind that wheel and turns the key, his life may be ruined. He'll drive around for a few hours, endangering the life of every man, woman and child who crosses his path. He might be caught the very first time he takes a car. Or if he's not caught by the police he'll leave your car somewhere and decide to do it again, and again, until the day he does get caught. Teen-agers steal more than 1,000 cars every day. The U. S. Department of Justice and your state and local law-enforcement agencies are concerned. They know that taking a car for a joyride is just the first step. Our prisons are filled with men who started out this way. Tlu y went on to become thieves, muggers, and even killers.
