*v.. PG. / SfeC. - PLAIN DEALER - NOV. 10# 1967 Charles Weingart Again Heads Federal Land Bank 66 Know Your School" Night The huge investment required to operate a modern farm was illustrated at last week's annual meeting of the Federal Land Bank association of Woodstock during a discussion of credit requirements. The Woodstock Flba serves farmers in Boone, McHenry and Lake counties, ft is farmer- owned and governed by formers from the three counties serving as its five-man board. Re-elected to the board were Charles Weingart, McHenry, and Kenneth Denipan, Lake Villa. At the re-organization meeting of the board after the annual meeting, Weingart was reelected president and Lloyd J. Turner, Garden Prairie, was re-elected vice-president. Later, the outstanding job farmers do in feeding the nation was outlined in a talk -- "A farmer feeds himself and 35 others." In the United States fewer than 10 per cent of the papulation is engaged in farming; in Russia half the people are required to supply that country's food, Dr. Robert Spitzer, president of Murphy Products company, said. Dr. Spitzer, outstanding featured speaker, expressed deep concern over the inroads being made to undermine the freedoms this nation cherishes as its heritage. Discussing the amount of capital required to farm was Donald J. Nelson, regional supervisor for the Federal Land Bank of St. Louis. At the meeting members observed the 50th anniversary of the farmer cooperative credit system. Citing USDA estimates, Nelson said the amount of capital investment needed to assure modest annual earnings of $5,- 500 varies from $87,000 for a Wisconsin dairy farmer to $119,000 for an Illinois hog former. A Kansas wheat farmer requires a $148,000 investment. "With more specialization and expansion of farm units ahead, the use of more credit will be a necessity," he said. Farmers in the three counties served by the FLBA of Woodstock exemplify Nelson's assertion. A steady increase in mortgage loans outstanding is taking place, and for the year ending last June 30, 497 loans totaling $12,173,627 were in force. A year' earlier the total was $11,243,000. Robert Coots, new manager of the FLBA, pointed out the volume increase has been accompanied by a decrease in the percent of delinquencies on loans. "The number of monthly payment loans has increased and this has been a contributing factor to the decrease in delinquencies." Coots is manager and Mrs. F&ye Todd is assistant manager. Among guests was Tom News About Our Servicemen Aviation Electrician's Mate Third Class Frank W. Plushkis Jr., USN, husband of the former Miss Nina D. Dube of 2804 Myang, McHenry, was advanced to his present rate while serving with Training Squadron 28 at the U.S. Naval Air station, Corpus Christi, Tex. The advancement was based on the results of a competitive professional examination given to all eligible Navy personnel wifiiin this specialty rating. Also considered were performance of duties, time in service and time in grade. The squadron trains more than 250 instrument pilots yearly, in multi-engined planes, for patrol, logistics and airborne early warning squadrons in the Atlantic and Pacific fleets. Private First Class John J. Lahti, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. John E. Lahti, Route 9, McHenry, completed an electronics specialist course Oct. 27 at the Army Signal school, Ft. Monmouth, N.J. During the course, he was trained to operate and maintain various Army electronic equipment. \ Be Wise Shop In McHenry Frey, manager until early September when Coots assumedthe managerial position. Frey, now a graduate student at the University of Illinois, expressed appreciation to the board for its confidence in him through his six years as manager. Weingart presented Frey with a gift from the membership--a desk globe and stand. In the windup talk, Dr. Spitzer aksed his listeners to "be aware of your power as a citizen. Too many people feel they will not be heard so don't try. Take part in community affairs. Be thankful we are citizens of a free country." "Be aware of the great weapon for world peace that we have to offer because of our great agricultural industryfood and the know-how to produce unlimited quantities." Returning to his central theme, Dr. Spitzer concluded: "We have a mighty weapon. Communist nations fear it. That weapon is our freedom, and it is indeed mightier than any missile. Let us never forget, however, any freedom must be appreciated and freedom must be boosted and held up for others to see." "Whether this country survives depends not so much on what happens in Viet Nam," he continued, "but it depends on how we uphold and work for the freedoms in Wood stocks, Hunt ley s, Burlingtons and Harvards of America." Listing principles that helped make the United States great Dr. Spitzer cited these: Freedom of religion; Freedom of education; Freedom of speech; Freedom of enterprize; Freedom to choose our leaders; and the Freedom to stand for something without being ridiculed or ostracized. •> ; These were fowrfHnr scenes in McHenry High school on Tuesday evening, Nov. 7, when "Know Your School" night was observed during American Education Week.
