ILLUSTRATIONS ABOUND IN'68 COUNTY HISTORY There will be more than 400 illustrations in the History of McHenry County planned for distribution next July - August, Editor Lowell Nye announced this week. "The cut schedule at present has hit No. 275 and the preparation of some of the larger township chapters has not reached the editor's assembly point. We are certain by now that the schedule will pass 400," he reported. Figuring an^average per picture cost of $5, this will mean upwards of $2,000 alone for illustrative work in this 900- plus page book. Persons who have put off ordering a book are urged to give it consideration at this time, instead of waiting until the book is out. There is a reduced price up to Jan. 1, 1968, of $16.00 per copy, with a $5 bill or check constituting down payment on a $16 order. The announcedpost-publication price of $18.50 could feasibly be raised, due to the larger- than-anticipated picture budget. "We have passed the 250- page mark in the process of producing a 900 page book, all on this county of McHenry," said Mr. Nye. "The value will be there. You have thirty days to place an order at the reduced rate, by sending payment to Box 484, Woodstock, 111." Arrangemtns have been made for Christmas gift certificates for those who wish to give a book as a present, and Christmas orders have already started coming in. The recipient will receive an attractive gift certificate card mailed out by the business manager, W.H. Tammeus of Woodstock. ASK ASSISTANCE WITH ADDRESSES FOR TAX BILLS McHenry County Treasurer Cal Skinner, Jr.^s trying to develop a satisf^ctwy system of changing addresses^r real estate tax billing purposes and he needs the help of those who have purchased property in McHenry county since Jan. 1,1966. He asks that all new property owners make certain that the Treasurer'8 office knows where to send next spring's tax bills. The taxpayer should write or call the Treasurer's office in Woodstock (815-338-2040), give one's legal description and ask them to check to whom the next tax bill is scheduled to be sent. Now, some lawyers and real estate dealers put the new tax address on deeds when they are recorded and some do not. When some people get a tax bill addressed to the previous owner, they notify the Treasure's office that they want it addressed to themselves next year. Unfortunately, some don't realize that they haven't paid their taxes until they are sold at the fall tax sale. Even while pointing out the haphazard current procedure, Skinner said that starting next month -- ^ J^ru. Z to be exact - a systerriatic prbeedure will go into leffecti 'After" that date, all" deeds filed in Recorder of Deeds Harry Herendeen's office will have to be accompanied by a Declaration of Value on which there is space for the new tax address. "My office will get this change information for every property recorded and, therefore, be able to keep more cur-' rent than ever before," Skinner pointed out, But, for this past year the address changes will still have to be brought to the attention of the Treasurer's office by the property owner if he wishes to make certain that his tax bill is sent to the right person. How Can 1? Q What is an easy and efficient way of burning initials, monograms, and other intricate designs into wood? ^ A. Simply paint on the design you want with a fine brush, using ordinary fingernail polish. Then light one end of the polish with a match, and the flame will neatly follow the design, charring the wood along the painted path. Q. How can I prevent washable garments from creasing so easily later? A. Be sure not to dampen the clothes so much that it is difficult to iron them absolutely dry. Clothes that are not ironed completely dry tend to crease and wrinkle easily after just one wearing. Q. How can I renoyate- a stiffened chamois? A. By soaking it in warm water to which a spoonful or so of olive oil has been added. Q. Is there anything I can do about squeaking shoes? A. Try standing your noisy shoes overnight in a strong s&lt-water solution, shallow enough to cover just the soles -SSof the shoes. And if you want to preserve the shape of your shoes during this treatment, better use shoe trees. Q. What is a good way to warm up leftover meats? A. Place them in a pressure cooker, add three tablespoons of water, let the steam build iq> to the starting point, then remove from the fire and let the pressure go down. Q. What can I do about grease stains on suede jackets, bags, hats, shoes, and the like? A. Try sponging them with vinegar. Then, when dry, restore the nap by brushing with a stiff-bristled brush. Q. What is a good formula for a whitewash for interior walls? A. Mix one pound erf powdered glue with one gallon of water. Then mix 20 pounds of hydrated lime with two gallons of water, stirring carefully , until all lumps are dissolved. Combine these two mixtures, and stir until smooth. Finally thin with water to a suitable consistency. Q. How can I make the washing of very greasy dishes much easier?' A. By squeezing lemon juice into your hot water before beginning your chore. Many other such shortcuts and hints are contained in my new household manual. Q. How can I remove paraffin easily from a container in which it has been melted for canning? A. Fill the container with boiling water, then allow this to cool. The paraffin will float to the surface of the water. Q. When packing bottles filled with liquids into my luggage, how can I make sure they are leak-proof? A. By dipping the corked ends of the bottles into melted paraffin. Q. What is the best way to clean jade ornaments? A. These usually require only dusting. They can, however, be washed in mild, warm suds. Rinse carefully, and wipe dry. lEGALNOnCE CLAIM DATE January 1, 1968 is the claim date in the estate of Jacob Fritz deceased, N'o. 67 P 270, Circuit court, McHenry County, ni-f inoi8.
