New intensive care unit has been tested and is now in service. Major uses will be for serious surgical cases, per sons seriously injured in accidents and coronary cases. INTENSIVE CARE UNIT SERVING AREA HOSPITAL An intensive care unit with facilities to accommodate four patients is in service at Memorial Hospital for McHenry County, Bert Hanson, administrator, has announced. Installation and testing took place last month. Two bedside cario-care units and central monitoring facilities have been installed in Room 314 to provide cardio-care monitoring and evaluation. Included in the $12,000 investment are the following items: two cardio-care bedside monitors; four channel cardioalarm units at the nurse's station; electrocardiogram tracers; four channel cardiofnemory unit; single channel slave oscilloscope; memory tape cartridges; and a compact D.C. defibrillator with a built-in synchronizer. " This equipment assures our patients of the most modern coronary monitoring procedures with easy-to-operate equipment," said Hanson. In addition to coronary cases, this equipment will be valuable for serious surgical cases and for persons seriously injured in accidents. Three nursing staff members had three weeks of training in classes at Loyola university to qualify them to serve in this critical department: Mrs. Margaret Norgart, Mrs. Elvera Shahoda and Mrs. Margaret Meyer. Staff • doctors, including Dr. Margaret Phillips, Dr. Robert Foresman and Dr. Robert Simpson, have trained ^ddtional personnel with a series of programs at the hospital. Keane, brakeman for the Chicago and Northwestern railroad, was caught between two freight cars near the depot in this city Friday receiving severe internal injuries and was taken to St. Joseph's hospital in Elgin. Mrs. Walburga Stegman, a former resident of McHenry, died in Forest Park, Feb. 7, at the age of 93. The francise to sell Skelgas in and around McHenry has been given to P.H. Freund of Elm street. Henry N. Foss and family are rtioving to Barrington where Mr. Foss has accepted a position with F.A. Hecht as gardener. He resigned his position with the Rosedale greenhouses here to take up his new work. „ Mrs. T.C. Kaelin entertained a party of relatives at her home on Richmond Road Tuesday afternoon in honor of the eightieth birthday anniversary of her mother, Mrs. Marie Miller, which occurred on that day. Mr. and Mrs. Ben T. 01- sen of Riverdale announce the marriage of their daughter, Bernice, to Mr. William Burmeister on Feb. 9. LOCAL CHURCH HOLDS RUMMAGE SALE MARCH 21-22 It's time again to clean out those closets and attics for all those items we no longer need. They will be of use to the Ringwood United Methodist church's rummage sale coming up on Friday and Saturday, March 21 and22. Friday's hours are from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Any and all usable items may be brought to the church basement anytime after Sunday, March 16, as the ladies will be there working to accept things. TWO LOCAL BOYS LEAVE FOR SERVICE Last Wednesday, Feb. 26, Roger Barker, son of Helen and Lloyd Barker, and Peter Braden, son of Mrs. Jane Griffith, left along with seventy other young men from the Woodstock depot to report to Chicago for physicals and induction. Pete and Rog are in Jie same barracks in Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. BAKE SALE FOR 4-H On March 8, the Ringwood 4-H girls are having a bake sale. They will hold it in Justen's furniture store at the corner of Green and Elm streets in McHenry from 9 a.m. until all sold out. BIRTHDAYS ETC. On March 9, it's happy birthday wishes to Nina Jepson -- and to niece, Kathy Appelt, happy birthday on the eleventh. ATTEND CARD PARTY Last Wednesday, Mrs. L.E. Hawley, Mrs. Wolf Shadle, Miss Mae Wiedrich and Mrs. Flora Carr attended the Eastern Star card party in McHenry. AROUND TOWN Rev. Ray Parker called on Mrs. Fred Wiedrich, Sr., last Sunday. Also, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Wiedrich and family of Burlington called on Mrs. Wiedrich, Sr. Alice Peet visited Jeanette Machenstadt in Elgin on Sunday. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Feb. 24, 1944) Local friends were happy to receive word this week of the, birth of a 6 lb. baby daughter, Judith Ann, to Rev. and Mrs. Heber Miller of Graettinger, Iowa, on Feb. 12. Rev. Miller was pastor of the McHenry community Methodist church for several years until he was transferred to the Iowa church. Lewis C. Bishop, 68 years old, died at his home on Park street about 1 o'clock today. Mr. and Mrs. John Schmitt of Johnsburg celebrated their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary in their home. About 75 relatives and friends were present. Mrs. Edward Newkirk and Mrs. Ford Jackson were hostesses at a personal shower given at the home of the latter on Main street in honor of Mrs. George Jackson. The old Phalin place, which has been tenanted by Ed. Conway, is now being occupied by the Jack Hunter family, who moved from the Kelter place on the Crystal Lake road. Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Diedrich celebrated their fortieth wedding anniversary at a family gathering at their home on Court street. The coiqple was married by Father Mehring at St. Mary's church, Feb. 17, 1904 and resided on the Diedrich homestead north of here until they moved to their present location. About forty farmers of the classes for farmers are taking advantage of the opportunity of repairing farm machinery and studying poultry problems. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Feb. 12, 1959) The dedication service for the new Alliance Bible church is planned for Sunday, Feb. 22, at the church on John street according to Pastor Charles Hallock. Karen Thompson was one of sixteen Girl Scouts selected to represent Sybaquay Council at the Senior Girl Scout roundup to be held next July at Colorado Springs, Colo. The young lady, chosen from an original field of twenty-four, had a further honor bestowed on her by being named leader of one of the two patrols. McHenry residents have learned of the unexpected death Feb. 4 of Mrs. James F. Mraz who died of a heart attack in California. She had been a summer resident of Pistakee Bay for many years. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Weber returned from a 7,000 mile trip through the west where they visited their son, Bill, in Alameda and their daughter, Mrs. Thomas Murphy, and family in San Diego, Calif. Participating in convention sessions of the Illinois Association of Plumbing Contractors and its women's auxiliary in Rockford this week are Mr. and Mrs. Jerome J. Buck of McHenry. Kelso, son of Mr. and Mrs. John R. Kelso, 1914 W. Indian Ridge drive, McHenry, is assigned to Company C, 3d battalion of the 4th Infantry division's 12th infantry as a squad leader. The CIB has been awarded since late in World War n for sustained ground contact against an enemy. In honor of its singular meaning, the badge is worn above all other awards and decorations, over the left breast. It is a blue rectangle with a silver rifle mounted on it superimposed over a curved wreath. Subsequent awards are represented by stars at the top center of the wreath. His wife, Nancy, live in Elgin.
