?' PG, 4 - PLAINDEALER - FRI. MARCH 7, 1969 1 SPORTS Elgin Maroons Beat Warriors 65-44 In Regional Tourney THE TALL MEN of Elgin had the height advantage on the rebounds as they out-towered our Warriors Monday night in first round play at Elgin. Gary Fairchild, No. 41, looks on as 12 of Elgin outstretches Mike Morenz of McHenry. PLAINDEALER PHOTO \ by Bert Hagemann The large size Maroons of Elgin high school ended the Mc- Henry basketball season last Monday night in the first round play of the Elgin Larkin regional, 65-44. Until the waning two minutes of the third quarter, the scrappy Warriors managed to stay with 4-5 buckets of the ,12th ranked team in the state. It was late in the third quarter tho, that the superior size of the Maroons began to take its toll on the smaller Warrior squad. Rick Sund, the big Maroon guard, began to score with regularity during this period, and the 6'5" forward Lamz began to make his presence felt on the glass. From there on it was downhill for McHenry as the game, but outmuscled Warriors, fell to their last loss of a somewhat disappointing season. It was no. disgrace to lose to a state ranked ball club, and McHenry went down in typical, scrappy fashion. Although our record this season was far from spectacular, we XlNE OF SIGHT is found by Warrior Gary iFairehild as he leaps to find a better view :of the basket. The Warriors of McHenry fought I'a hard battle against the Maroons of Elgin in the regional tournament at Elgin Monday night. Elgin, ranked twelfth in the state, won the game 65-44 and has since gone on to beat Harvard 103-73. PLAINDEALER PHOTO Earl Walsh SO I HEAR Sports Editor ^ ^ People are always thinking of *us. He acted like -it was something unusual. That old familiar White Sox tune is not music to our ears. We need hitters. Pitchers we seem to have. Seems to us the rule makers are fiddlin' around too much with the diamond rules. They take some of the strategy and second guessing out of the game. When the manager has to use the same pinch hitter the entire game, the grandstand managers won't be able to tell the boss what a knothead he really is. McHenry fans can certainly not be embarrassed by a squad which gave 100 percent on the floor consistently, nor can they be embarrassed by a large segment of the student body which took our roundballers to heart midway through the season. Perhaps our long awaited resurgence to cage significance is upon us for next season, this reporter hopes so fervently. I salute the roundballers for doing one thing consistently all season; giving their best. No one anywhere can ask any more. The abbey on top of Mt.
