BOY SCOUTS FUN DAY Thirty Boy Scouts from troop • 145 of Wonder Lake spent Saturday in Rockton where they participated in many .sports activities. They were afceornpanied by John Doherty, scoutmaster, Jerry Palko, assistant scoutmaster, and' Ray Wenk, secretary. Drivers Last year, this column reported on a progressive highway traffic sign inspection program developed by the Connecticut Highway department. Utilizing both day and night inspection teams, the Connecticut program was the most advanced we'd heard of. Now another state - Arizona- • has instituted a modern highway sign inspection program de-' signed to prevent death or injury due to missing, improper or damaged highway signs. " We just can't afford the luxury of a 'horse-and-buggy' sign inspection program anymore", says Carlie Bowmer, traffic civil engineer of that state's Highway department traffic engineering division. . Bowmer feels an effective inspection system is necessary to provide a high level of service to the state's motorists, and also because of the increasing number of cases where courts are finding governmental bodies responsible for accidents caused by missing, damaged or improper highway signs. When found negligent, many local and state governments have been held liable for damages sustained in such accidents. Implemented late last year, the Arizona program calls for once-a-month visual inspection of each of the 34,000 -plus signs that are the department's responsibility. In any given three-month period, two daytime inspections check for missing and damaged signs. A third inspection -- night -- checks for reflective brightness and readability. Inspectors utilize Arizona's excellent milepost marker system in reporting which signs need repair or replacement. These markers, located along highways at one-mile intervals, help pinpoint inadequate signs on a master map. Repair or replacement is effected with a minimum of error and delay. Most states don't have regular sign inspection programs. But in Arizona, it's part of a sign man's programmed duties --the only way to make sure the program is done right, according to Bowmer. " We're not aware of a single case (in Arizona) where a m!ssing or deteriorated sign was determined to be a factor in a fatal traffic accident," says Bowmer, adding, "We're ahead of the game now and we intend to stay there". , 1 i i I IT PAYS TO I SHOP IN I i 1 McHENRY j Km YOUR MONEY IS WORKING Crippled Kids Can Be Helped 1969 Easter Seal Campaign March 1 -April 6
