Sleep wasn't with us last night so the brain is foggy. Maybe the week will get better.- Tom Gausden, Marian Central quarterback, has Yince Lombardi's autograph thanks to his brother, Mike. It seems Mike and his bride attended a wedding at which the Lombardis were present. Tom had the whole picture in mind so Mike went as an instructed delegate. Mike found Lombardi to be a gracious person who is interested in anybody who is interested in football. Smilin' Carol Beck couldn't keep a straight face as we picked up our Sunday paper. "How's Orphan Annie getting along?", was the query. Carol knows we worry about poor Little Orphan Annie getting into so many scrapes. Those experiments with the rules are getting off the ground like a lead balloon with the baseball managers. Marian Donnelly and Mrs. Joe Sutton are readers of S.I.H. They said so! You know the years have gone by when you look forward to a Saturday night at home to listen to Lawrence Welk. Junior homeroom 135 won the Marian Central all school intramural basketball championship last Friday with a 26-24 overtime win over Senior homeroom 220. This championship game concluded a two month program that involved all of the sophomore, junior and senior homerooms. The fifteen homerooms that participated played a total of five league games that qualified them for the playoffs. The above mentioned championship game was played before the junior and senior student body during the lunch hour on Friday. Hie seniors took a 15-11 lead at halftime but could not hold onto the lead as the juniors tied it up at 24 all with fifteen seconds remaining in the game. In the three minute overtime session, Dan Lambert of the is ....Should snow tires be removed? Does anybody have an Old Farmers' Almanac? We were wondering ... What would happen to older folks (who paid for those colleges and universities) if they moved in with a mob to wreck everything? Joe and Mary Etten returned from Florida where they met Chuck Hiller and the Pittsburg Pirates. Joe played golf with them. (Suppose Mary read a. book.) , Chuck is going to manage the Pittsburg Class "A" team at Salem, Virginia this year. We wish him every success. That old Johnsburg Tiger spirit should rub off on his players.' Somebody had fun this week in sending us a postcard with nice "pictures of President and Mrs. Nixon. Here is. the message: "Things hectic since Pat and I moved into the White House. Thanks for all your help during campaign! Drop in any time. Sincerely, Pat and Dick" :-- Wonder if that card would get us into the White House for a visit? \\'e could try the back door. The next thing we know Mr. Wrigley will be writing. ST. PATRICK FIVE FINISHES SEASON WITH 14-10 MARK The St. Patrick Varsity finished with a 14-10 mark. They finished 3rd in the Legion tournament. They lost to Jr» High and won against St. John's of Johnsburg the next day. They finished 3rd in the Elgin tournament. They beat St. Catherines of Dundee. Then the next Sunday we beat St. Charles of Hampshire. Then we lost against St. Mary's of Woodstock. We beat St. Joseph's of Elgin to win 3rd place. Steven Maxsor Sports writer junior squad hit on a short jump shot to clinch the victory for the juniors. The junior team played good defense and rebounded well on their way to the all school championship. Dan Lambert, Marian's starting quarterback last fall, led all scorers with 13 points, while Chuck Leucht and Harvey Reitenger led the senior attack with 8 and 9 points, respectively. Reitenger played a particularly outstanding game and led all rebounders in that department. Sophomore homeroom 112 won the sophomore crown by defeating homeroom 207 in a best two out of three game match. Mike Carey, John Holthaus and Jay Cristy led the 112 team to victory. Some of the ieading scorers in the league were Joe Zahn with a 21.5 points per game average, Mike Carey (19.0) Chuck Leucht (18.3), Marty Conway (17.5), Pete Stelmach (15.0), Craig Ludford (14.3), Chuck Marke (13.7), and Rich Saunders (12.3). The program was sponsored by the physical education department at Marian and involved approximately 125 men. Tennis lessons are now 'being offered for interested students and golf lessons will be available to those interested students in the spring. TIPS on Camping Now you can bring along the bacon, and it doesn't need refrigeration. Look for it in-cans at your supermarket. * * * If boat camping- is your game, you'd be wise to investigate the special marine line of aluminum ice chests. They're rust- and corrosionproof. SPORTS Baseballers Open Indoor Drills At McHenry High by Bert Hagema n The Warrior varsity basebill team opened drills this Monday with pitchers and catchers in the gym. I have nine veterans returning from last years 3rd place ball club, and prospects for this season are certainly very bright. Three of the returnees will be entering their third year of varsity competition, and all occur)/ key positions on the ball club. Pitcher-first baseman Dan Reinboldt is ba;k for his final year of high school baseball, and he is joined by M<. Henry's all conference double play selections, shortstop Mike Janik and second baseman Mark Camasta. Reinboldt had a winning record on the mound last season and his strikeout ratio averaged one per inning. Camasta and Janik led the ball club in almost every offensive category there was, so with normal improvement they should be very tough this season. Other lettermen include three more pitchers; Senior Steve Salter will be assisted on the ipound by two returning juniors, Tom Janik and Mike Freund. Janik led the mound corps last year in innings pitched and strikeouts, and Freund contributed a 1.60 E.R.A. Other key returnees include Jerry Freund behind the plate, Larry Christy at first or in the outfield and Larry Miller in the outfield. A number of other ballplayers reported to our first meeting, and all will be considered; they are as follows; Ed Toid, Terry Fluger, Steve Rohrer, Gary Fairchild, Broc Olson, Don Smith, John Smith, Tom Hurckes, Steve Thompson, Jeff YanKanegan, Scott Nickels, Steve George and Judd D3cker. From this seemingly fine crop \V3 should find enough ball play - - ers to be quite respectable this year. Next week we'll preview the league and our chances. Fishing in Calm Waters Requires Greater Care While most fishermen like to fish on comparatively calm days, it is necessary to fish with greater care and quiet in calm waters. On windy days, some fish bite better but usually will seek the lee side of a lake or pond where the food may be blown toward them. Insect eating fish often feed near the surface at night or in early morning, but the persistent fisherman can find such nocturnal feeders during the day, too, by fishing in deeper waters or special "hiding places." In general, the best time to fish -- according to the real fishermen -- is "every chance you get."
