\ MCHS Warrior Soph Basketball Team Finishes Winning Season Bert Hagemann The Warrior sophomore basketball team ended its season last week with a semi-finals defeat in the Mundelein sophomore basketball tournament. This final loss gave the little Warriors an overall season record of eleven wins and nine losses. The orange and black started the season off slowly, came on fast after the holidays, and only recently faltered at the end of the year. If \ you are statistics minded, here are a few figures for those who played the bulk of the time. Bruce Harbecke led the squad in total points, just edging guard Jerry Miller, 216 to 204, while Miller led the squad in total time played, edging Gary Hosier by one quarter. Highest free throw percentage went to Harbecke with a 63 percent effort from the charity stripe, and he also led in rebounds, both offensive and defensive. Other sophomores who contributed to the overall team effort were Len Gerhke, Ron Miller, Greg Kuretski, Chris Long, Joe Dehn, Art Nitz, Steve Fain, Bob Keuchel, Bill Haag, Randy Wagner, Greg Freund, Tom Funk, Todd Baker, Scott Curry, and Dave Watkins. Sophomore coach Bill Blankenhorn was capably assisted by student managers Dave Buch and Rick Clark. A winning record is certainly something to be proud of, and if this group works hard in the future they could be varsity winners in a year or two. BOWLING NOTES TOMASELLO»S THURS NITE LADIES T.N.T. SPORTS Waukegan showed clas s in ed- Toiving a Heavy Trailer is \o Ordinary Job Towing a trailer, particularly one of the newer, heavier models, often exerts more of a strain on an ordinary passenger car than the car is designed to handle. Fortunately for camping and boating enthusiasts, several automotive manufacturers have recognized this problem and are producing vehicles designed and equipped with trailer towing in mind. International's Travelall station wagon is one of the leaders in this special-duty category. Because it is not built on a conventional"automobile frame but on a more husky type, the Travelall can pull trailers up to 10.000 lbs. without tail-wagging or bottomdraeging. The roomiest of all station wagons, it seats nine adults without any knocking of knees or squeezing of elbows. It can also carry 124-cu. ft. of cargo with the second and third seats removed. There is a choice of five models in the line, two of these equipped with all-wheel drive All feature a number of important trailer-towing characteristics. These include a unique choice of. suspension systems, best possible visibility, and widest choice of optional equipment They won't let us forget St. Patrick's Day. Charlie Lasch came in with clippings about the Irish. Now we wait for Father's Day before we rule the roost again. Two days out of the year isn't so bad. Some writers know how to hurt a guy. One fellow refers to the White Sox attack as being about as fearsome as a dishrag. BEARS IN BOATS Once upon a time there was a big noisy bear arid he got into a boat and stomped around Pretty soon the boat upset and the bear swam happily away He could swim. The "Fighting Freshmen Warriors" just completed a highly successful season of basketball with a 15-3 record. In the final game of tournament play, McHenry lost a 35- 31 game to Carmel. A fine team .>effort on the part of the Warriors, but failure to score up to the capabilities seems to be the story of this game. Our boys stayed in the ball game by hustle and pride, a characteristic of this fine young team. The Warriors were nine points down during the third quarter and came fighting back against a well-coached Carmel ball club to tie the score, but couldn't gain the lead. Coach Gary Collins states, •'This group of young men have been a pleasure to work with and their parents should be proud. I wish there were more interested parents like these and athletics at McHenry high school would take a large step forward." Congratulations to Coach Collins and his team. (We have some statistics that will follow). When Day's Done. Be Comfortable For the camper, the fisherman or the relaxing resorter who wants to remain informal but dress properly for dinner or an evening out. the new styling trends follow his path. Tattersall slacks, for instance. are in excellent taste worn with a single color cotton shirt, and the mock turtle is "in." Equally in good taste would be a washable wool sweater or double breasted blazer. Boating has the answer for those who dream of owning an island for get-away-from-itall vacations. Meet the modern houseboat, the portable island with all the conveniences of home and all the potential to lull passengers into the mood of the South Seas. Room, not speed, is the essence of houseboating. according to the Johnson Motors News Bureau Houseboats run from 18 to more than 50 feet, and selecting the best model for a particular family is similar to choosing a summer home. The "typical" houseboat has private bedrooms, toilet and shower, complete galley < that's a kitchen, landlubbers!», a heating unit and a deck-patio for sunning and outdoor entertainment. The houseboat-island is particularly suited for fishing and swimming. Large lakes and rivers offer the best water for houseboating. The quiet coves of TVA lakes, for example, are ideal parking places, as are the sandbars along the Mississippi. Houseboats can be rented, too. A check with the chamber of commerce in a popular boating area should uncover the names of houseboat rental operators.
