Content* 3o% School Officer Unusual interest centers on the McHenry school elections this year, particularly because only one of the nine candidates for positions on the two boards is an incumbent. There are four positions to be filled. Jhe race which has drawn the most candidates occurs in Consolidated District 15, where five seek to fill two vacancies. They are Myra E. Murray, Mrs. J.F. Casey, Anna Mae Cuda, John M. Coughlin and Richard F. Golbeck. Neither incumbent, August Uttich, who has served as president, nor Dr. William Kohl, is seeking re-election, u High School'District 156 Ws four candidates seeking two positions. They are the incumbent, Vale Adams, who has served as president, Catherine S. Alvary, Clint Claypool and Edward Giiettler. A contest also exists in Harrison School District 36 at Wonder Lake, where three men are running to fill two vacancies. They are Norman J. Williams, Jr., George Street and Raymond L. DeWerdt. Mr. Street is the only incumbent seeking re-election. Joseph Sullivan's term expires and he will riot run for office this year. In Johnsburg's District 12, the terms of James E. Long, Jerome E. Olsen and Richard R. Marshall expire. Long and Olsen will seek re - election and the third member to file is Vincent Tonyan. All terms are for three years. Whether the uniformed police officer is in view or not doesn't seem to give any more reason for speeding than shoplifting or any other kind of violation of the law. Nevertheless, we well understand indignant motorists who were ticketed and fined almost before the concrete base on the Lincoln-Chapel Hill road stop signs was dry. We were informed on a Tuesday noon by county officials who should have been the first to be notified, that the state had placed an okay on the request for four-way traffic regulations at that point. The Plaindealer carried a front page notice that day, but found that the signs were already in place before the paper reached its readers. We know at least one person, (Continued on page 5) Photographer Wins Honors WAYNE GAYLORD The Illinois Press Photographers association, which last week announced its 1968 standings, lists the Plaindealer photographer, Wayne Gaylord, tied for fifth place with 124 points. Mr. Gaylord won a first and a third rating and two fourth places during the year. He ranked behind Paul Sequeira of the Chicago Daily News with 314 points, in first place, BobStrawn, Paddock Publications, 284; Gay Settle and Don Bierman, both of the Chicago Daily News, 278 and 226 points, respectively; Gaylord tied for fifth with Ron Slavicek of Hollisters Newspapers; Larry Brooks, Decatur Herald & Review, 104; Larry Graff, Chicago Sun Times, 82; Tom Greiger, Paddock Publications, 80; and Bob Finch, Paddock Publications, 70. In all, forty-six photographers entered 1,598 pictures in competition. There were only seventy-two awards for the ,year, of which Mr. Gaylord won four. SUZANNE GERASCH Suzanne Gerasch, member of the faculty of Antioch Community high school has been appointed a group advisor in next summer's World Academy European study and travel program. As a group advisor, Miss Gerasch will chaperone a group of American secondary school students participating in the European program. A primary, responsibility of the group advisor is the well-being and comfortable adjustment to the foreign environment of each member of the group while traveling and on campus at their foreign university of cultural center? To be accepted for participation, a student must have the appropriate educational background and maturity to enjoy and benefit from the program. World Academy is a private, (Continued on page 5) NEW PUPILS REGISTER AT ST. PATRICK St. Patrick's school will hold registration for new pupils who have not yet registered after all the Masses on Sunday, March 30, in the school office. This registration is for all new first graders and new families in the parish; also those who have children in the public school and wish to transfer to the parochial school. Parents must register new pupils in person. To be eligible for first grade, a child must be 6 years of age before Dec. 1. Baptismal certificates should be brought unless the child has been baptized in the church. SHERRY GEHRKE Sherry Gehrke, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard P. Gehrke of 3212 W. Skyway drive, McHenry, has been selected to receive an NDEA fellowship from the University of Illinois grant for the study of the Russian language. Miss Gehrke holds a 4.85 all university average based on a perfect score of 5. The study grant will take her to Europe for the entire summer, leaving from New York June 10 on a ship chartered by International Cultural Exchange of the U.S. It will hold 950 persons, all university students from throughout the nation, enroute to countries in Europe for study. Two hundred and fifty, in which Sherry is included, will spend their time in eastern Europe and Russia. During nine days at sea, pro- (Continued on page 5) Candidates To Meet School Citizen Group The regular monthly meeting of the Citizen's Advisory council will be held on Wednesday, April 2, at 8 p.m. in the West Campus high school auditorium. School board candidates for McHenry Elementary School District 15, McHenry Community High School District 156 and r, McHenry Junior college have been asked to attend. This will give everyone in the community an opportunity to meet and talk with the candidates, as the public is invited to attend. Palm Sunday And Holy Week R lies Scheduled St. Patrick's Confraternity of Christian Doctrine invites residents of the community to participate in a Holy Weekprepparation at the church hall, starting Monday, March 31, and extending through Wednesday, April 2, from 8 to 9 p.m. Monday evening will be devoted to the general introduction to the i> meaning and worship of Holy Week, pointing out particular and individual themes of each day. A film strip followed by discussion will conclude the program and refreshments will be served. , Tuesday will feature an explanation of the Passover event of Israel, the Passover meal commemorating this event of Israel, presented through a film strip with a short discussion following. The Wednesday theme centers on the Jewish Paschal meal, with an arrangement of the Last Supper as an historical drama. Palm Sunday services at St. Paul's Episcopal church will include the blessing of Palms and Eucharist at 7:30 a.m.,distribution of Palms and family Eucharist at 9 o'clock and church school at 9:45. On the Wednesday before Easter, there will be Holy Eucharist at 9:30 in the morning. The first of several spring elections on various levels is scheduled for next Tuesday, April 1, when voters will go tothe polls to elect township officers. To be filled are the posts of one assistant supervisor, a town clerk, an assessor and three members of the board of auditors. Three parties are listed on the ballot, as well as two running as independents. Most highly contested race is that for assessor, in which the incumbent, Eva G. Sparks, running on the Certified ticket, is being opposed by Lewis E. Belshaw, Republican party, and Sibre "Sib" Whiting and Jeannie Jo Stilling, both independents. The latter two are the only names on their ticket. A three-way race exists for the office of town clerk, now occupied by H. Walter Anderson of the Independent Taxpayers party. He is opposed by Daniel M. Johnson of the Certified party and Albert A. Adams of the Republican party. Two seek the position of assistant supervisor, now held by Charles P. Weingart. He is opposed by Thomas L. Birmingham of the Republican party. There are two complete slates presented for the board of auditors. The only incumbent is Harold "Harry" Freund, who REGISTER FOR CITY ELECTION THROUGH APRIL 9 Persons who wish to vote in the city of McHenry election on April 15, are reminded that they must be registered. Open registration dates are April 2 to April 9 (dates inclusive). It will be necessary for those not registered to do so within this period of time., Voters may then sign the affidavit form at the polling places in their wards. Election laws now provide that in all municipalities over 500 population, registration is required before one can vote in a municipal election. It has been reported that some misinformation on the number of aldermen to be elected has confused the voters. Only one alderman is to be elected in each ward. To have their votes count, voters are reminded to vote for only one candidate for alderman. is running with Edward J. O'Brien and Phil W. Mangold of the Independent Taxpayers. They are opposed by a Republican slate of Connie M. Johnson, James H. Wegener and Wm. "Curly" Martinec. The polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. in eighteen township precincts, which are located as follows: Precinct 1: Ringwood Community school. Precinct 2; McHenry Junior High School, 3711 W. The location in Precinct 7 will be the building at the corner or Roberts road and Rt. 176 in Island Lake. Radio dispatch will not be used as previously announced. The polling place for Precinct 8 will be the Texaco gas station on Rt. 31, south of Idyll Dell road, McHenry. The Nunda township office at 129 N. Main street, Crystal Lake, will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 29, in order to accommodate persons wishing to make application for absentee ballots. RAUEN HONORED -- A local resident, Arnold J. Rauen, 2721 N. Regner Road. Pistakee Bay, McHenry, (right) was recently given threeawards by Glen R. Johnson, national director, Savings Bond division, United States Treasury department, in recognition of Mr. Rauen's twenty-seven years of service in the division. Most valued of the three is the Albert Gallatin Award for Distinguished Service, which Mr. Rauen is holding. The other two items are a National Directors plaque, and the Medallion award, a set of five presidential medals representing Presidents Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy and Johnson, the men under whom Mr. Rauen served during his distinguished governmental career. INVITE PUBLIC TO ANNUAL TOWN MEETING APRIL 1 The annual town meeting for the transaction of business of McHenry township will be held at 8 o'clock on Tuesday, April 1, at the VFW clubhouse, McHenry. A moderator will be elected, who will hear and consider reports of officers, and appropriate money to defray the necessary expenses. The public is invited to be present at this meeting. Kindergarten Registration Set April 25 Public school kindergarten registration for the 1969-70 year will be held Friday, April 25, from 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 2:30 p.m. A legal birth certificate and fees for registration and milk are necessary that day. Those who do not have a legal birth certificate may obtain one by sending to the county courthouse, in care of the Bureau of Vital Statistics of the county in which the child was born, for which the fee customarily is two dollars. No child may be registered without a legal birth certificate. To be registered, a child must be 5 years of age on or before Dec. 1, 1969. Parents are asked not to bring children on registration day. Lead roles include Tony Elliott of McHenry as Mr. Snow, Hazen Arnold of Woodstock as Billy Bigelow, Mary Jo Byrnes of Woodstock as Carrie, Debbie Grennan of Woodstock as Het- HAZARDOUSROAD CONDITIONS CAUSE AUTO ACCIDENTS Kathleen Thomas of 3004 W. Mourine lane, McHenry, and four passengers escaped injury Tuesday morning when the bus Miss Thomas was driving tipped onto its side as she drove on Maguire road, east of Harvard. She told sheriffs deputies she was driving east, approaching a west-bound auto, when the bus spun around in the opposite direction. The bus is operated by the McHenry County Association for Retarded, McCullom Lake. In another accident, which occurred Tuesday evening, both drivers were injured and taken to McHenry hospital. Rose Thorkilsen of Park City, Waukegan, who was ticketed for failure to yield in turning, was released the following day. The second driver was Robert E. The story deals with the lives of Billy Bigelow and Julie Jorden and how they overcome difficulties in one part of their lives only to face tragedy in the next. The musical score is renowned for its beauty. Since its first production in the 1940's, listeners have responded enthusiastically to numbers such as "If I Loved You," "June is Bustin' Out All Over, " and "You'll Never Walk Alone." The play will be directed by Don Barden, who is known for his productions at the Woodstock Opera House. Assisting him will be Robert Billimack, an English teacher at Marian Central. Choreography director is Father William Budden, assistant pastor at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Cary. Sister M. Julien, choral director at Marian, is in charge of music. In charge of scenery and costumes is Father Ron Conro, assistant pastor at Christ the King church in Wonder Lake. FIRE IN CAR When Cheryl Grosenraud of Riverside drive, McHenry, backed out of the family garage Wednesday morning, wires under the dash of the car caught afire and started to burn. ' McHENRY JUNIOR HIGH BAND PLAINDEALER PHOTO CONTEST WINNERS -- The seventy-one-piece Junior high band, under direction of Carl Kohrt, .brought home" highest' honors in the state band contest held at Oak Crest Junior high school, Waukegan, last Saturday. This was the second year the band has rated superior. Twelve bands from this part of the state were entered in the Class B contest, based on the enrollment of the schools, which must be between 1,801 and 3,500. The band's selections were "Lakeland March", "Symphonette for Band" and "Belmont Overture." The school also has a beginning band of 55 and a cadet band with the same number. They will be heard in concert on May 20.
