PG. 5 - PLAINDEALER - FRI. MARCH 28, 1969 Young McHenry Women Plan Study-Travel Abroad (Continued from cage 1) non-denominational organization based in the United States and Europe. The American offices are in Cincinnati, (Mo. The academy, comprised of college and university professors, secondary school teachers and principals, and others interested in education, emphasizes the adaptation of foreign study, travel and recreation to the needs of American students. Participants visit from four to seven European countries, depending on the program selected, and may receive credit in their school after successfully completing the program. The curriculum and course has been designed to assure a sound academic credit-granting program. Forty-day European pyorwams are offered for next sQmmer in art, history, government, literature, drama, music and four languages: French, Spanish, German, and Italian. Each program combines a balance of activities: carefully planned travel from country- to-country, sightseeing excursions, special tours and time for individual interests and recreation. On each foreign campus an experienced headmaster and staff from American and European schools and colleges administer the study and travel program. Classes, taught by competent American and foreign instructors and pro-, fessors, are generally in the mornings. One of the great benefits of the academy program is the opportunity for the participant to experience the foreign culture and environment, to practice the language with the "natives of the country, to study original art masterpieces, to visit historic monuments and buildings, to observe foreign governmental sessions and to gain first-hand knowledge of a country and its people. The role of the group advisor is of great importance in the academy program. Teachers serve in this capacity because of their experience and ability in the supervision of young people and their professional dedication and belief in the rewarding experience of foreign study and travel in the educational development of American students. Miss Gerasch is now arranging special meetings with interested students and their parents to acquaint them with the program and to show a color film made in Europe last summer (Continued from page 1) fessors accompanying the trip will provide a "crash" course in Serbo-Croation, the language of Yugoslavia. From the docking point of LeHavre, France, the group will continue by rail to Zagreb, Yugoslavia, via Paris, Switzerland, Vienna and Italy. In Zagreb, they will be enrolled for six weeks at the Soviet Summer School of Foreign Languages for an intensive language course. During this time, Miss Gehrke and the others will be living at the University of Zagreb with Russian students and will be allowed to speak only Russian and South Croate. Weekend excursions will be made to Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Italy and Greece. Upon completion of study in Zagreb, the group will tour Vienna, Munich, Warsaw, Leningrad, Moscow, Kiev and Crimea before going to Yalta. There they will spend a. week in a Russian youth camp, where they will work, eat and dress the same as the Russian youth. At the conclusiori of the week, they will be flown to Vienna, proceed by train to Paris and then travel by air to New York the end of August. The trip will give Miss Gehrke eight hours of credit toward graduate study and enable her to earn a master's degree in Russian. Presently, she is a member of Alpha Lambda Delta, and exclusive honorary society, and Zeta Tau Alpha, social sorority. Pearl street, McHenry. ftfusin' & Meanderin (Continued from page 1) a daily commuter to Chicago, who turned off Rt. 120 on his return home that Tuesday, approached the intersection and turned left onto Lincoln road. Hardly was he around the corner when he found the authorities waiting in a rather obscure place to apprehend offenders. There was no warning, and a ticket for a court appearance was given. Perhaps this is a familiar story, or maybe this driver was the exception. While it must be conceded that the stop signs are very apparent, any driver who has travelled a road daily for years realizes that a new sign can go unnoticed. We can't help but recall all of those reckless drivers who seem to go speeding on their merry way, unnoticed, as we extend sympathy to the careful driver whose crime would seem to merit a warning in view of the circumstances. WINTER WANES -- As winter waned and soft buds on trees indicated that Spring was about to make us aware of its presence, Old Man Winter burst into town Tuesday for what residents hope is his last appearance of the season. The photographer captured the one redeeming feature of Winter's return -- a beautiful landscape -- in this scene near the McHenry Country club. • , PT AIMDFAI.FR PHOTO Teen-ager Doreen Patterson has collected four boxes of toys but is still seeking more for the Easter Bunny (which she will portray) to distribute at the Woodstock Children's home next week.
