To present great works of art as they appeared when the last stroke of the brush was applied, is the challenge a conservator faces in his daily work. Alfred J. Jakstas, chief conservator at the Art Institue of Chicago, has been responsible for restoring and preserving many masterpieces, including Tiepolo's " Madonna of the Rosary" and Giovanni Mar - tinelli's "Judith." Mr. Jakstas will discuss his experiences in the conservation of art at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 17, at the Woodstock Opera House. This will be the final program of the season's Creative Living Series, sponsored by the Women's Guild of the Woodstock Fine Arts association. An art in itself, a conservator's job is painstaking, requiring a great de^l of research and testing of the painting. Many works of art have been distorted and damaged by previous attempts at restoration. Martioelli's "Judith" is an example. It was painted in 1650 and "restored" in the 19th century. When acquired by the Art Institute, it was blurred and lifeless. Through photography and X-ray, two additional figures were revealed. Using solvents and scalpel to remove, layers of resin and paint, Mr. Jakstas uncovered the faces of a serving woman and of Holofernes, whom Judith had beheaded. The original sharp, clear lines of the painting were once more evident. Mr. Jakstas has many other interesting "case histories" to relate. His long experience in the field of art conservation testifies to this. His interest was generated when he was a Harvard medical student. During his senior year, he bacame an apprentice in Harvard's Fogg Museum of Art. Four or five years of post graduate study are required to become a conservator. He received his B.A. degree from Harvard in 1938 and was a teaching fellow at Harvard in 1943-44. Coffee will be served prior to the program at 9:30 a.m. in the Green room of the Opera House. Anyone holding a season ticket may bring a guest and have her ticket punched accordingly.
