The one pictured here is that of the Woodstock congregation at 11- 605 Catalpa lane, which presently has seventy-eight members. Have you ever wondered what goes on in a Kingdom Hall and how it does serve a good purpose in your community? A Kingdom Hall is their "church" building in which Jehovah's Witnesses hold the majority of their religious meetings. Many of these meeting places are rented by the Witnesses for this purpose, but increasingly throughout the world they are building their own. Although attractive and suitable to the surroundings, the kingdom halls are yet simple and functional. Sometimes a building or theatre is purchased and renovated to serve as a kingdom hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. More frequently, a new building is erected, and in most cases, the Witnesses them selves participate in the building, renovating and mainten- BAPTIST CHURCH REDECORATION IS COMPLETED The First Baptist church has just completed redecoration of its sanctuary and will formally dedicate the new surroundings cm Easter Sunday morning. Those who attended the dedication service of the church six years ago will remember the floors were not coyered^ much of the building remained unfinished and unpainted. "It may be difficult to recognize it as the same place" was the observation of Melvin Hicks building chairman and deacon of the church. "For several months we used chairs in the sanctuary and then one Sunday the local Methodist church offered us their pews as they were in the process of remodelling. These pews were used until just recently when new pews were purchased and the sanctuary completely redecorated." Decoration included enlarging the sanctuary to provide seating for a maximum of 300 persons. This includes a choir loft of forty seats j All the walls were repainted and carpet was installed in the aisles. A new public address system also was installed. "We have come a long way since we first met in the store building on Main street" was Peter Saar's comment when the work was finished. Peter was a young high school boy who was one of the first to come to the church when it was organized in 1961. He is still active in the church after a tour in the United States Marines and is now locally employed. He is a leader among the young people of the Baptist church. Look...it's Easter! On Sunday in each congregation there is a one-hour discourse on a Bible subject presented by a qualified speaker. In Woodstock, this public discourse is held at 9:30 a.m. A wide variety of subjects comes under consideration at this meeting, such as marital problems, today's youth and Christian morals. Other topics appropriate to the community are discussed. The public discourse is followed at 10:30 a.m. each Sunday by a congregational study of God's Word, the Bible. The Watchtower magazine is used as a study guide and provides the theme for each week's study. This one-hour lesson is conducted by a question-and-answer method. Everyone in the congregation, including children, has an opportunity to contribute individual answers. In addition, each congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses provides a "Theocratic Ministry School". This is usually held on Friday at the Woodstock congregation at 7:30 p.m. This is a continuous training school for men, women and children. All the Witnesses, including children, are helped to develop talks on various Bible subjects. There are special textbooks and a well-planned program of activity. Students also give short talks to the group, and a qualified counselor offers helpful suggestions for improvement. Following the Theocratic Ministry School, at 8:30 p.m. is their "Service Meeting" where instruction is given on effective ways of presenting their Christian messages. This is a one hour period in which they also discuss up-to^jfcte instruction in teaching techniques. More information will appear in a future issue. NEW DAYTIME KEYPUNCH CLASS OPENS APRIL 10 The second session of daytime keypunch training is -scheduled to begin on April 10 at McHenry County college. The classes are held on Thursdays from 12:30 to 3r30 with a full session lasting five weeks. Evening sessions are also being held on Monday and Wednesday evening. ENROLLS IN SCHOOL Beth Okal of McHenry, has paid her matriculation fees at North Central college in Naperville and plans to start her freshman year of classes next fall. Miss Okal, a senior at McHenry West high school, will attend one of several orientation and registration sessions at NCC this summer. "CHRIST FOR CRISES" THEME OF CONVENTION "Christ for Crises" will be" the theme of the ninth annual convention of the Illinois district of The American Lutheran church, announced Dr. Elmer A. Nelson, district president. The convention meets in the Hotel Pere Marquette, Peoria, April 8 through 10. In developing the convention theme, said Dr. Nelson, we have engaged speakers with expertise in urban, rural and international affairs. Dr. Irine Diggs, professor of Anthropology, Morgan State college, Baltimore, Md., critically approaches the problems of black and white Americans. She "tells it as it is" as she presents life in the slump for disadvantaged Americans, the cruelty and prevalence of racism, the consequences of the continuing and growing decay of our inner cities, and the economic bondage which enclave minorities in affluent America. Dr. Diggs proudly wears her black. One of the major crises, seemingly forgotten by most American, Dr. E.W. Mueller, executive director of the Department of Church and Community Planning of the Lutheran Council in the United States of America, will tell the 550 delegates, what is happening in rural America. The need for land conservation, the dissipation of natural resources, the migration from the land, the mechanization of agriculture and the economic squeeze of the tradtional family farmer are all a part of the fabric of the crisis upon us, according to Mueller. His address: "The Crisis of Rural"Povery", focusing on Southern Illinois and Southern Indiana. Dr. Nicholas Nyaradi, director of the School of International Studies, Bradley University, Peoria, Illinois, addresses the Wednesday evening banquet audience with the subject, "Stronger Than the Atom." Newly elected, youthful, Dr. Kent S. Knutson, president, Waetburg seminary, Dubuque, Iowa, presents a theological study on the Christ for Crisis theme. A special feature for the Wednesday night banquet program will be the New Pace Singers, Concordia College, Moorhead, Minnesota. This fine, singing group of young collegians presents its gospel witness in the modern musical idiom so popular today. * The Metropolitan Ministries committee, the Rev. Mr. Myron L. Lindblom, chairman, pastor of the Christ Lutheran church, Palatine, has directed one of its inner city pastors, the Rev. Mr. Lowell Torgerson, Community Lutheran church, 1701 W. Monroe Street, Chicago, to prepare a film depicting the dire spiritual and physical poverty commensurate with ghetto life. Pastor Torgerson hopes his camera's eye will open the eyes of the complacent and shatter their complacency.
