The first talkie to be presented will be "On Trial" with Pauline Frederick, Burt Lytell and Lois Wilson. John W. Smith, the genial proprietor of the Empire, is to be commended for his enterprise in installing the talk- I ies in McHenry. Very few, if \ any, towns the size of McHencan boast of this new feature. Hie Empire has been equipped with Vitaphone, one of the best outfits that can be installed. It would be a wise thing for all automobile owners to lock their cars and take the key with them when parking in McHenry or any other city, is the warning of Phil Guinto and other police officials of this city. Miss Esther Buchhert of Chi cago became the bride of Mr. Edmund Keefe of Spring Grove April 20. The wedding ceremony took place at the Queen of Angels church, Chicago. Nine of the members of the Linger Longer club enjoyed a trip to Chicago Saturday. They saw Marilyn Miller in "Rosalie" and had dinner at the Bismark hotel. Mrs. Thomas Wilson, Mrs. John Stilling, Mrs. Ray Howard, Mrs. Peter M. Weber, Mrs. Charles Mertes, Mrs. Peter J. Schaefer, Mrs. Lester Page, Mrs. Frank Meyer and Mrs. Fred Schoewer. A.H. Mosher returned Monday from Rochester, Minn., where he journeyed to see Jack Ryan the foreman at the Plaindealer office who is a patient at Mayo Bros., where he underwent a serious operation. Eissfeldt has given up his positions as pastor of the McHenry Zion Evangelical church and also the Round Lake church. He will continue to serve here until a new minister arrives. Rev. Eissfeldt's new work will be with the Lutheran Child Welfare association at Addison, 111. Cadet Joseph Cannon, son of Dr. and Mrs. H. Floyd Cannon of Waukegan, formerly of McHenry, has won the distinction of two places, on the academic and disciplinary honor rolls at Missouri Military Academy in Mexico, Mo. The Harold Aim family has moved from Chicago to an apartment on Park avenue. Pfc.l Lawrence Nimsgern, who has been stationed in Alaska and Canada the past ten months, is enjoying a three week furlough at his home in Spring Grove. Charles Vycital suffered a broken* bone in his leg near the ankle last Thursday evening while playing volleyball in the high school gym. Alan James arrived at the ' Woodstock hospital Sunday, April 23, to brighten the lives of the George Jacksons. Mrs. Jackson is the former Joyce Newkirk. Proud grandparents are the Ford Jacksons and the Edwin Newkirks. The office of price administration has announced that next winter's fuel oil coupons will remain valid for an entire year beginning Sept. 1 and ending Aug. 31, 1945. The Stahler family now make their home in the former B. J. Adams place on Fourth street. They moved to McHenry from Chicago. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 16, 1959) Friends are proud to Learn that Paul Patzke has been named committee chairman for the Chicago Garfield Park conservatory central international gladiolus show next summer. The. Illinois gladiolus society hosts the annual flower show. Several thousand spikes will be put on display. At the annual reunion of several hundred members of an agency-conducted tour, Mrs. Peter A. Freund of Fox street was named "happiness queen" from among several hundred in attendance. As queen she has her choice of a trip to various parts of the country within the next year. On May 4 an impressive program will mark the dedication of McHenry's new post office building at 104 S. Green street. A new telephone exchange at Pistakee Highlands will be formed April 19 with about 250 customers according to telephone manager R.C. Zahn. Miss Colleen Ward, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M.L. Ward of Allen avenue, has won the silver wings of a United Air Lines stewardess after four and one half weeks at the stewardess training school in Cheyenne, Wyo. She now serves aboard main liners flying in and out of Chicago. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lawrence of Chicago visited in McHenry last weekend and called on Miss Ann Frisby who is a patient at the local hospital. McHenry friends and relatives attended the solemn Mass of thanksgiving for Rev. Fr. Lu^lu^, B, Delire on the occasion of his twenty-fifth year in the priesthood. Hie rite took place in Holy Rosary church, Chicago. Father Delire is the brother of Mrs. James Powers of McHenry. Two new McHenry businesses are holding grand openings this week. They are Millstream Drugs at Elm street and Gem 1 Hour cleaners at Elm street. A vote of the high school faculty resulted in Judy Hans and Sue Et he ridge being.selected to attend Qlini Girl's State this summer. Their al- 1 ternates are Jean Borchardt and Rosemary Roti. Judy Hnas is being sent to Girls' State by the McHenry Legion auxiliary and Sue by the Wonder Lake auxiliary. Leonard Hutts of R. 2, McHenry, was taken to Woodstock hospital for treatment for minor injuries sustained when his car left the road, struck a sign, then rolled over and landed on its wheels. A young Richmond boy, Brad L. Duncan, 9, whose grandparents live at Wonder Lake was suffocated Sunday afternoon, April 12, when he was buried in an excavation cave-in near his home. A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Buss of Wonder Lake at Memorial hospital April 12. David Boger of McHenry has been employed to teach social studies and language arts at" Clarence Olson junior high school in Woodstock. This year he has been teaching in the Gavin school, Ingleside. Paul R. Nitz of McCullom Lake died April 12 at McHenry hospital after being in a coma for more than twenty-four hours. Hie cause of death was a cerebral hemorrhage. . In a pretty wedding ceremony performed at St. John the Baptist church in Johnsburg, April 4, Miss Delores Thiel of Johnsburg was married to Donald Babarsky of Sunnyside. GARRETT MOOK Services were conducted Monday afternoon from the Hamsher funeral home. Fox Lake, for Garrett Mook, 75, a Spring Grove resident for the past five years. Burial was in Fairmont Memorial Park cemetery, Willow Springs. Among survivors is his widow, Eileen, and two sons. JOHN BODE Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the Birren & Son chapel, 1356 Wellington, Chicago, for John Bode, 91, who was found dead in his home at 2819 W. Johnsburg road, McHenry, Friday, May 2. The deceased was a retired postal clerk. His wife, Clara, preceded him in death. His only immediate survivor is a daughter, Mrs. Pauline Rogers, Chicago. The body was removed by the George R. Justen & Son funeral home to the Birren chapel. Burial was in Acacia Park cemetery, Chicago. Veterans administration hospitals helped train 35,000 doctors, nurses and other medical personnel during the past f i s cal year.
