Dundee Upsets Our Warriors, 2-1 by Bert Hagemann Hie last place Cardunals of Dundee upset the front running applecart of the Warriors on Tuesday of last week in an 8 inning overtime contest, 2-1. Bob Bolier, the Card southpaw, went the route against three Warrior chuckers, allowing only three hits and one walk. The lethargic Warriors still could not break out of their hitting slump, but did, manage to-, score a run in the top of the sixth to go ahead. Steve Salter allowed a Card run in the bottom of that frame however, and then Mike Carlson wafe dealt the loss in the overtime frame when a teammate went to sleep defensively with the winning run on second base. Credit must go to Boiler for a well pitched ball game, and even though the Warrior twirlers played the Perils of Pauline with runners on base constantly, we had the clutch hurling to get out of the jams when needed until the fateful eighth. Our scoring opportunities were almost nil however, and when Warriors 2 errors; Dundee 2. ' ' • \ - WARRIORS B R H George CF 2 0 0 Camasta 2B 1 0 0 M. Janik SS 3 0 1 J. Smith IB 3 0 0 T. The exception is the flood area along the Mississippi river. Federal regulations are very specific regarding damage caused by the wake of a boat. The operator is liable for any damage and may be fined up to $2,000 and sentenced to a year in jail. The wake from a sightseer's boat may drive debris into walls of flooded homes, break* windows, crack and break off plaster and cause other kinds of structural damage. Personnel of the Coast Guard and the Department of Conservation are on duty along the Mississippi river to enforce boating regulation This was followed hy a few'«°u .f' 'T?. Star C. On Sunday, May 11 when the Morgan stallion King's Top Man enters the show ring as part of the parade of stallions at the Mid-Continent Field Day he will- carry with him a rich heritage closely interwoven with the history of McHenry county and the town of McHenry itself. Though he was bred and foaled in southern Illinois his life and background return again and again to this area. King's Top Man 12704 is descended from the great Morgan stallion Colby's Young Green Mountain who was bred and kept jist outside the town of McHenry- all his life by-Mr.tNJS. Colby. Mr.*. Frank Sayler, a grandson of Newell Colby still lives at 327 Chestnut street in Woodstock. Frank Say tor's other grandfather was J.R. Sayler also an old time resident of McHenry and a well known 'Morgan jbreeder. James Sayler owned the beautiful stallion Sayler* s Gifford Morgan. McHenry's own Dr. J.E. Sayler is a great grandson of James Sayler. The illustrious Morgans bred by these two oldtime McHenry residents appear in King's Top Man's pedigree. The Colby farm is now Lakeland Park subdivision and the old Sayler farm located on Draper road is still a working farm. Mr. Frank Sayler and his daughter Viola were valuable sources of information to Mrs. Suzanne Koerner when she wrote an article on old time Morgans in McHenry county, Illinois for the 1968 Historical issue of the nationally known Morgan Horse Magazine. Mr. Sayler allowed Mrs. Koerner to reproduce old handbills and sale catalogs that were printed by the McHenry Plaindealer in 1892. He gave her a photograph of his mother's, driving mare Leslie, and permitted her to use his rare copy of the History of McHenry County published in 1885. All of the photographs and printed matter including a life drawing of Sayler's Gifford Morgan done by artist Franklane Sewell are now in the files of the Morgan Horse club, Inc. Star and Suzanne Koerner found King's Top Man hidden away on a thoroughbred farm in Spring GroVe, 111., acquiring him after his owner was killed in an automobile accident. From that time on the gentle black stallion could go nowhere but up. In 1966 he was Grand Champion Morgan stallion at the Illinois State Fair. 1967 found him Grand Champion stallion at the National Morgan Jubilee, making him one of the four regional champion stallions for that year. At the 1968 National Morgan Gold Cup Show he was first in stallions five years and over. During his show career Topper was trained and shown by Art Titus of Batavia, Illinois and Clude Morrette of Fremont, Ohio. On his retirement from the show ring at the end of the 1968 ! show season King's Top Man was stabled at the Playboy club resort in Lake Geneva, Wis., where his owner Star Koerner, Jr., is Director of Public Relations. Here Topper lived a charmed life. Affectionately dubbed "Resident Playboy" he was visited by many famous personalities, not to mention the lovely bunnies who are always going down to the stable with a goodie for him. Among the celebrities that have come to the Playboy stable to see Kin's Top Man are Jack Jones, Delia Reese, Louie Nye, Eartha Kitt, and Kaye Ballard. Topper has appeared on a live television broadcast on CBS in Chicago and most recently was iised as a live prop in shots for the 1969 Sears catalog taken at the Playboy resort. A short time ago he was cm a trail ride with the mysterious Mr. Hugh Heffner, head of the vast Playboy empire. You must admit all of this is not bad for an obscure black Morgan horse who was discovered through an ad in the Chicago Tribune. Now Topper has come home to Harvard, 111., where he will take his place as foundation sire at Mr. and Mrs. Koerner's Morgan farm, Antrim Starland. Antrim Starland is located southeast of Harvard, 111., onStreit road. Star and Suzanne Koerner have made it their goal to help bring the Morgan horse back into prominence in McHenry county, to carry on in place of those grand old Morgans' that turned heads on the roads in and around the town of McHenry. In the late 1800s Morgans were considered by many to be the best road horses. They were admired for their speed, endurance, and stylish way of going. The Mid-Continent Field Day in which King's Top Man will appear is to be held on Sunday May 11, at the Maywood Training track just east of Elgin, Dl., on highway 20. Beginning at 10 a.m. the day will be devoted to demonstrations of the versatility of the Morgan horse. In addition to the Parade of Stallions there will be saddle and driving demonstrations, along with cutting, halter and roadster exhibitions. There will also be a special part of the program set aside for 4-H Orientation. Admission is free. This event is especially directed to youth, therefore, we urge young people and their families to attend. Visitors are always welcome PG. 6 - PLA1 NDEALER - WED. MAY 7, 1969 SPORTS : ^BOOflOOOeOiOOeOOOOOOOOOOBOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOfl» Earl Walsh SO I HEAR This week we have a very interesting story on the sports page about Morgan horses and the part some, of McHenry's early residents played in this history. Suzanne Koerner brought in the story and picture. The Koerners moved to McHenry in 1965 (now reside in Harvard) and bought a horse. "Never did I dream that the lineage of this fine Morgan horse and the history of the town of McHenry were closely woven," said Mrs. Koerner in a magazine article. She found that the Colbys, the Saylers and the Hanlys were well known for their fine Morgan horses. Sports Editor when Guy Clemens offered to hook his "little" team onto the wagon. They didn't laugh when that pair of Morgans dug in with their "toes", straightened out their backs and took that big load up the ramp. From that day on we have always remembered the name Morgan. They will have to keep Linda Meyer (Plaindealer Make-up Artist) out of Wrigley Field. Oh, what she said about our Sox! So, she toured in to see the Cubs play the lowly Mets in Sunday's doubleheader. You know what happened. Far be it from us to say more. w CUDA'S ARMY of Varsity Warrior golfers are now 9-1 after wins over Woodstock, Elgin, Barrington and Antioch. The MCHS Varsity members are seated Nelson Adams and Scott Fisher. Standing L-R are Harry Hans, Russ Leight, Jim Heard, Kurt Knaack, Jeff Michels and Coach Chuck Cuda. PLAINDEALER PHOTO We recall that Guy Clemens had a Morgan team back in our pony days on the farm. We also recall a day when Uncle Charlie Gibbs was putting up hay on the Flusky farm (later Fred Cooley's). This is the first farm west of Crystal Lake Road on Bull Valley Road We could grow sideburns or a beard to keep up to the crowd, but how would that look with our high forehead? A very heavy team of horses foiled to pull an extra heavy load of hay up the ramp to the barn floor. They laughed at Antrim Starland. At the Field Day spectators are encouraged to see the horses up close and ask questions. While you are at the Field Day come over and meet King's Top Man, a living representative of the history of McHenry. Dave Kent remarked that we would probably have an excuse for our White Sox now that Manager A1 Lopez had to retire. Told him we might have to get in there and help run that team. "Let's hope it never gets THAT bad", was his smart remark. If dresses get shorter, They hadn't orter. McHENRY BOYS BASEBALL LEAGUE If s Not Too Late!
