Springfield, 111., -- When a boating accident occurs, no piece of equipment is more important than a marine radio -- if the operator keeps cool and gives complete information. "A signal can mean the difference between life and death," Ken Gruenewald, boating supervisor for the Illinois Department of Conservation, said. "But the boater must keep his wits and send the information needed by the Coast Guard and other rescue agencies. Sometimes a signal is received but is useless because an excited operator did not include enough details." MAYDAY If a person is in dire peril, the proper format for a distress signal is the word MAYDAY repeated three times on a distress channel, 2182 kilohertz or 156.8 megahertz. Then the operator should say: "This is" and give the name of his craft three times. The operator should give the location and description of his boat and an account of the help needed. The call should be repeated until it is answered. If the boater has a citizen's band radio the same procedure may be followed. The important thing to remember is to give complete information, Gruenewald said. Everyone cm board a craft equipped with a radio should be familiar with the correct procedure for transmitting distress signals. CHAIN-O-LAKES Gruenewald pointed out that the Coast Guard, marine units of the Chicago Police Department and the safety boat of the Department of Conservation are on duty on Lake Michigan during the boating season.. Coast Guard craft, sheriff's boats and conservation department boats often patrol inland navigable waters like the Chain-O-Lakes, the Illinois river and the Mississippi river. Many of these boats are equipped with radios and will provide help to a boater in trouble. On the Mississippi, Illinois and Ohio rivers there are other ways to obtain help, Gruenewald explained. A boater can notify a lockmaster or a towboat captain that he is in distress. The radio operator should give the person monitoring the call the number on the nearest mileage sign. This information can then be relayed by telephone to the closest source of assistance.
