MEMORIAL TRIBUTE -- Crowds gathered on the banks of the Fox river last Friday as members of veterans' organizations officiated at a short service in which they paid tribute to those of all wars who were lost at sea. Ray also introduced Cullom- Knoll officers and Ladies of the Lake jfresident Carrie Kurth. Invocation was by Pastor Schneider of the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran church. The pledge of allegiance was led by Ken Betts, Jr., of Boy Scout Post 131. • • h Guest speakers, were Boy St6ralf J9 in 1= « Scout Leader Stu Hoak and Francis Pickett, Commander of American Legion Post No. 491. Ray Lary read a list of names of boys and girls from our village who are serving in the Armed Forces. Mrs. Tomasello, whose son lost his life while serving our country, was presented with a wreath, which she in turn placed on the Memorial Rock. A wreath was placed on the water by the Boy Scouts of Troop No. 131. While the flag was being raised by the Boy Scouts there was fire volley and taps by the American Legion firing squad. Hie Benediction was by Pastor Schneider. There was an exhibition by *M^vfscounts after the ceremony. We are so grateful to all.r of these groups for taking the time to perform this ceremony for us. The American Legion Firing Squad, Women's Auxiliary representatives, American Legion Color Guard, Sons of the 11 American Legion representatives, WWl Barracks, and those always impressive Viscounts. And also the Boy Scouts of Post and Troop No. 131. PROUD GRANDPARENTS!! Mr. and Mrs. Randall Josserand are just thrilled with news of their new little granddaughter. Little Angela Sue Gum was born May 25 at Memorial hospital in Springfield, weighing in at 8 lbs. She is the first child for Arthur and San- - dra (Josserand) Gum of Petersburg. Paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Harold Gum of Tallulah. Maternal greatgrandmother is Mrs. Margaret Hendershot of Oakland. Congratulations everyone!! RUMMAGE Alw BAKE SALE TOMORROW Tomorrow, June 7, is the big dayl' The Ladies of the Lake hold their annual rummage and bake s&le at the beach house. The salejvill start at 9 o'clock and run until 5. McHENRY JUNIOR HIGH GRADUATES Thanks to the work of a good Samaritan^ I came up with a list of our boys and girls who are graduating from McHenry Junior high school June 10. Thanks Barb. MEMORABLE MEMORIAL DAY A suspenseful week ended for the,, Jake Levesque family at 1:15 a.m. Memorial Day with a call from California. The caller was son and brother, Lance Corp. Jeff, stating that he was leaving Travis Air Force Base and would soon be landing in Chicaero. The young Marine had been in transit from Chu Lai, Vietnam, for one whole week and was bumped four times, along the way. His joyful family met him at CHare about 6 a.m. Jeff completed his 13 month tour of duty and will be home until the end of June. A welcome home party had been planned which included farewell festivities for daughter, DeeDee,, who will be attending a six week German course at the University of Kansas this summer. There was speculation that Jeff wouldn't make it home in time for the gala, but the phone call dispelled that fear. About seventy-five relatives and friends were on hand, starting at 2 p.m. to greet thettoo guests of honor. Refreshments were served buffet style and the perfect weather improved party conditions. A beautifully decorated ,cake with military motif in red, white, and blue drew oohs and aaah's from the assembly. Jeff has plans to visit his many friends in the area during his time home. CLEAN UP DAY TOMORROW Tomorrow, June 7, is the big day for village clean-up. The trucks will be here at 7 a.m. to pick up the trash. Following are the rules concerning the pick-up. 1. Any item must be able to be handled by two men. 2. Tree branches must be tied in bundles. 3. Rags, etc., must be in boxes or other containers. 4. No 55 gal. drums are to be used - trash must be in smaller containers. The trucks will not return a second time, so you must have your trash ready and waiting. Thank you for your cooperation. THE BIRTHDAY BEAT Birthday wishes for June 7 go to Kevin McKim who turns 16 and to Bob Fernandez...on the tenth it's seven candles on the cake for Tommy Frett and ??? for Chuck Thacker.. and little Billy Betts turns 6 on the eleventh. Happy birthday all. The Anniversary waltz will be playing on the eleventh for our Police Chief and wife, Earl and Myra Murray, who celebrate 31 years of togetherness.. Happy, happy anniversary. OUTING PROVES CHALLENGE FOR YMCA FAMILIES The Lake Region YMCA recently held a most unusual and challenging family outing. The activity was a treasure hunt and road rally, with the participants receiving instructions to collect the answers to questions by travelling throughout the service area. Families completing the trip closest to 80 miles, answering the questions, and returning within a two-hour period received recognition of their achievement with the presentation of models «of tiny cars mounted on attractive wooden pedestals. Since the mayors proved they were not too adept at milking a cow in previous years, plans -call tor a mayor's milk drinking contest this year. Invitations have been sent to mayors in thirty-five communities in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin, and it is hoped a number of them will attend the day's festivities and participate in the contest. The annual Milk Day parade will begin at 1 p.m. and the mayors will compete in the drinking contest immediately afterward at the Milk Day grounds near the high school.
