When Jim isn't busy as Chief Au ditor for the Shaw newspapers, he spends his time worrying about the White Sox. We told Jim a long time ago to set up a higher budget for the sports department. That would have given us a chance to go in there to spend some time with those Sox and offer some advice. Free advice. in the mountains." - Hi Jim Jones, Nice to be remembered. Sounds like you toss out a lot of bait. Do you catch any fish? Bet the wives are waiting to clean them. Trying to recall a poem we printed many years ago--"Out Fishing*." The late Msgr. Nix said it was better than a ser mon. If anybody has that poem, we would like to get it. Keep tossing out that line, Jim. Best wishes to You and Yours, S.I.H. We thought the Cubs were lovers. But, they went up to Montreal and turned out to be fighters. This same girl saw Glen this Wednesday morning with the purchase of a clothesline--double roll. She thinks he must be going after the big ones. Wonder what he uses for a pole? Credit Tom Burton for sta tistics on the Teenage Softball League. Hope he will send in some notes on the games. The Fourth of July is just around the bend. Let's hope the sun shines down on the Amer ican Legion Carnival. The Mc Henry Post has been good to and for McHenry down through the years. Without our service organizations, patriotism would go down the drain in this great country of ours. Excavations into a mound 79 feet deep in northern Pa lestine recently disclosed 18 different strata of ruins with flint of cave-man days at bot tom, through many layers of Egyptian monuments, Crusa der masonry, Arab records, Greek columns, Roman streets and buildings, to the present level of sun-baked ho vels. * - Heading the list of rookies, who were scheduled to appear in camp for the Lake County Rifles Tuesday, July 1, are Mike Cain and Ken Guttke Cain, who is better known as Chico, played with the Rock- ford Rams as a defensive back before inking his pact with the Rifles. The 27-year-old played his college ball at Northern Illinois and currently resides at North- lake. He is 5-8 and 165. Cain attended East Leyden high school. Guttke was a linebacker with * the Denver Colts before com ing to the Rifles. The versatile gridder, who also played at Northern Illinois one year, is also a center and a punter. Angelo Dabiero, vice-pres ident of the Rifles, named An drew J. Ortolano of Niles as director of player personnel. Ortolano, who is 30, has been affiliated with Bishop Quarter Military school, Oak Park; De- Paul academy; St. Benedicts highschool; Western Illinois State colleges; and Com missioner of football lea gue in Wells Park and bas ketball league in Clarendon Park. Other rookies who are sched uled to appear include Ralph Sotak, South Chicago, Indiana, a 6-2 240-pounder who played in the Marine Corps; Bill Lutz, Mundelein, who played semi- pro ball at Trenton, New Jer sey; and Roland Neal, who was Hadn't seen Junior Freund for a while, but he was in with a big smile Monday after the Cubs won two games. "Just wanted to drop in to say hello," said ' Junior. rKENOsaTmuN^ SPEEDWAY Wilmot, Wisconsin "Brenda" gave us this note that came in with a personal concerning a trip taken by Lor- ean and Roy Redwanz to Cal ifornia: "Adele, tell SIH that Jim says hello. James West, who played his prep ball at Round Lake, where he still resides, is also among the prospects for the Rifles. The center attended college at Northwest Missouri State col lege. Also trying out for the Rifles will be Ewell Gordon, North Chicago; Melvin Van Sky, Ar lington Heights; Bruce Bazsali, Elgin; who played at Carmel; Bill Henry, Franklin Park; Bill Selleck and George Herman, Palatine; Ken Schuerr, McHen ry; and Jim Andre, Lake Villa. More than 70 candidates were expected for the opening drills. The squad will be trimmed to " 40, plus an eight-man taxi squad before the season opener. Shamrocks Drop Games To Wheaton; Busy Schedule Of Games This Week JUNIOR SPORTS JAMBOREE In almost 200 Illinois com munities, boys and girls be tween the ages of 10 and 15 are vigorously running and jumping their way to physical fitness this month. They are striving for honors -in their own version of the Olympics-- the Illinois Junior Sports Jam boree. Entered in local meets, at the first level of the state wide competition, the young sters are vying for the honor of entering the regional con tests in 10 geographical areas beginning the end of June. From each regional, a maximum of 59 first place winners will e- merge, ready to enter the state finals at Granite City, Aug. 7, 8 and 9. The Jamboree, now in its 14th year, is sponsored by the division of community ser vices of the Illinois Youth Com mission in cooperation with the Illinois Jaycees. The McHenry Shamrocks lost a double header to Wheaton last Sunday, being edged out 1-0 in the first game, then dropping the second game 7-1. GAME 1 -- Adams pitched Wll, the only run off Jack came af ter Fair's error, a single by DeBruin, and Streitzel's sac rifice fly to center field. Jack struck out 5 and walked 1. Jack also got the only hit for McHenry, a single to the right side. •'* ' « ><'11 McHenry* 8 only threat came - in the 5th inning as Adams drew a walk, Nesheim hit into a fielders choice, Gary Schmitt was hit by a pitch, on the el bow, and had to be taken from the game when it tightened iq> on him. But, with runners on first and second, Pitzen and Farr could not come iq> with a big hit. GAME 2-- Game 2 was decided in the first inning when, af ter one out, Rand drew a walk, and after two were out, Pyet hit a tremendous home run over the left field fence. Again in this game McHenry* s ability not to get the key hit was evident, as twice in the third and sixth innings they got 3 hits but could only man age one run. This can also be shown by the team batting av erage of.187. . On the plus side McHenry relief pitching looked good as Bob Freund got out of a bases- loaded, nobody-out situation by striking out the side, and Phil^ Schmidt, making his 1st ap-~ pearance in 3 years, struck out 3 in 2 innings. H This week the Shamrocks are very busy, playing Elgin Lanes on Tuesday night, Johnsburg and Rockford IBEW at home on the 4th, Clarendon Hills at home on the 5th, and they travel to Johns burg Sunday. ^ BOX SCORES Game 1 AB R H McHENRY Spencer 3B Schaefer 2B Funk 2B Moyd RF Adams, J P Nesheim C G.
