As near as we can make out she is spending the week study ing rabbits habits. Or -- how does that bunny get into the petunia patch? You can't fence out rabbits. You fence them in. We can hardly wait for that next column to learn how the story of Brenda and the bunny comes out. Suspense over whelms us. Just watched young Tom Sea- ver pitch that near perfect game against the Cubs. It looked to us like Randy Hundley's bunt a- head of Jim Quails' hit may have shook up Seaver. Quails reached out and lined a clean hit to left field for the only hit for the Cubs. Spcrts Editor The New York crowd booed Hundley for his attempt to get a hit on the bunt. The sen timental wanted Seaver to get his" perfect game, but if the Cubs weren't still trying to win in the ninth inning they wouldn't be playing the game. It might win some ball games. It looks like Manager Lloyd Freund has a mighty good base ball team under the American Legion banner. On Wednesday McHenry earned the right to represent McHenry County in the District Tournament by defeating Wood stock 2 to 0. This game was featured by the outstanding one hit pitching of Steve Stahlman. This hit being a bunt single by the lead off man in the first inning. Stahlman also struck out 10 men and walked three. McHenry's two runs came in the second inning on a single by John Smith, a walk by Mike Freund, and then a single by Stahlman drove in the first run. Then a single by Hurckes drove in the last run of the game. Mc Henry will play their first tour nament game Saturday morning at Crystal Lake at 9:30. The Johnsburg Tigers pro vided their own fireworks over the weekend with victories over M;Henry and Maywood. Final scores of the gam?s read: Johnsburg 9-M:: Henry 6; Johns burg 8-Maywood 1. In the game against McHenry - ry, the Tigers took advantage of some sloppy 'fielding by the Shamrocks and scored three runs in the first inning without the benefit of a hit. Dave Klap- perich followed this up with a tremendous home run in the second. The Tigers added two more in the fourth, along with single runs in the seventh and ninth. M'. Hanry fought back, bit was never able to overcome the Tigers early lead. H'.tting stars for Johnsburg, all with two hits, were Harry M.iy, Dave Klapper- ich, Jim Meyers, and Dave Himpelmann. Dan Sompel pitched fine ball, going the dis tance, and picking up the win. Altogether, it was a most sat isfying victory for the Johns burg nine over their arch-rival M'. Henry. The next day the Tigers jour neyed to Mf. /wood and came back with another victory. Once again, Johnsburg quickly took the lead on a booming triple by Greg Todjy in the second inning. This was followed by two more runs in the third, one in the sixth, and three more ^ in the eighth to wrap up the vic tory. The hitting leaders for Johnsburg were Dave Klapper- ich, Harry May, Jim Mayers, and Dave Himpelmann. Himpel mann also was the winning pit cher, with another route-going performance. This weekend the Tigers will again play two games. On Sat urday they will entertain Wheat - on, with the game starting at 12:30. McHenry Teenage by Tom Burton Wednesday, July 2 Bakery 16 - Dee 13 The Bakery came up with a seven run first inning to offset Dee's five run first. John Rein- bold? s two-run double was the big hit for the Bakery. Bakery scored two more runs in the second to take a four run lead, but Rich Olesczutfs double cut the margin back down to two runs. The big hit was a double by Dave Weber. Dee fought back with a six run fifth, but it was not enough for them to take ttj§ lead. First baseman Mike Haffner had two key hits for Dee inthis rally. The Bakery's final run came on a home run by Dennis Kilroy in the sixth inning. The Bakery once again had balanced hitting, led by Gene Hester, Dave Shae- fer, and Dave Weber. Two Dee players had perfect days. They were Mike Haffner with four hits and Bob Mauch with three. Neal Gute drove in two runs and Mike Brown was two for three before he was injured in a fifth inning collision at the plate. HrrrV «••• -•<» l.c, n de signed to go places. Dee suffered its third straight loss. SAC jumped off with a quick three run lead in the first inning as first baseman Marty Conway hit his fourth homer of the year. SAC scored three mote in the sec ond <mi a key hit by Bob Hur ckes and a costly Dee error. Meanwhile, SAC pitcher Hur ckes had given up only one hit, a single by Domoto. Hie clin cher for SAC was a big seven run third that gave them a ten run lead. Conway started it off with his second home run of the night. Phil Owen tripled, Matt Justes singled back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning with run-scoring extra base hits by Larry Mil ler and John Tudd. Tltey picked up another in the fourth on back-to-back doubles by Dom oto and Reilly. SAC quickly in creased their lead to eleven runs when Bruce Wiedenhoeft hit his third homer of the sea son. Dee rallied for four runs on doubles by Neal Gute and Chuck Reilly, but it was too late. SAC's big guns were Mar ty Conway, who was three for four with two honkers, Matt Justes, who was also three for four, and Bob Hurckes and Bruce Wiedenhoeft who combined to drive in seven runs. For Dee, Chuck Reilly drove in three runs, Mark Domoto and John Todd each had three hits, and the league's leading hitter, Bob Mauch, had two for four. Sev eral fine fielding plays were turned in by Dee's right-fielder,\ Larry Miller. ^ Standings as of Monday morn ing, July 7 Lakeland 7-1 Bakery 6-1 Johnsburg 5-3 SAC 4-3 Dee 2-6 Reids 1-5 Cicero 1-7 Lakeland 23 - Cicero 7 This could have been a good game. Cicero was up after having won ttheir first game on Monday and several Lake land starterslwere involved in the Americans Legion game. However, Lakeland's super subs Bob Malpede, Tom Blen- ner, and Jim Larkin paced their team to a lopsided victory. Malpede had four for Ave with six runs batted in and Blenner and Larkin each added three hits. Several of the Legion play ers arrived in time to help out, namely Steve Rohrer, John Smith, and Steve George. Each of these three, along with Mal pede and Blenner, had a home run. Cicero was led by Broc Olson and Ron Miller who each had two hits. The team scored six of its seven runs in the fourth, as Olson and Amici had triples. This game also con tained one of the season's oddest plays. With one out in the Lake land fourth, Gary Fairchild hit a double. The ne^rf batter, Don Smith, popped cut to second base for the second out of the inning. However, Smith contin ued to run toward second and he was tagged out again. It took some explaining to make Cicero re!ize that he was already out and the imiing wasn't/ over. SAC 16 - Dee 8 .
