Jeannette .. w: mm ^ _ at MCCULLOM LAKE NEWS BONNIE MORRfc HEAR LOCAL LAD ON RADIO FROM SCOUT JAMBOREE Some very proud people a- round here were Ken and Jean nette Betts and family and of course grandma and grandpa Clyde and Lu Pillar when they heard youmg Kenny Betts' voice II 385-0941 on radio. Kenny was one of several boys attending the an nual National Boy Scout Jam boree in Idaho interviewed for the radio show which was aired this past week. Kenny told dif ferent things about the jamboree and said the highlight for him was meeting the widow of Sir Robert Beden-Powall, founder BUY ONE- DRIVE 2 I Buy a 4-wheel drive 'Jeep' Wagoneer, and one car's all you pay for. FRONT STREET 385-0403 See Our Display At The McHenry^ County Fair of the Boy Scouts. What a thrill for this young lad. Jeannette was notified ahead of time what station and time Kenny could be heard, and your imagination can tell you of the excitement that followed. While we're on the subject of Kenny Betts, we must tell of one more accomp lishment. Kenny at the age of 15 years has achieved the high est rank of Boy Scouts, the Eagle Scout. This rank attained by a very small percentage of Scouts and has taken much hard work. There will be an official ceremony sometime in August as Kenny takes his oath. Con gratulations to Kenny on this great achievement, and of course to his very proud par ents. FESTIVAL PLANS LAID OUT The annual big day for the village is coming up soon, and the Cullom-Knoll Association is hard at work on the plans for the festival. Following are the times for the events and the chairman of each. To en ter any event contact the per son in charge. SURPRISE VISIT Surprised, but happy was Mrs. Harriet McNamara re cently when her young grand son arrived at her house for a visit. The young lad, 12 year old Keith Ploettner of Chula Vista, Calif., came by himself by jet to spend a few days with his grandma and then in to Mt. Prospect to spend a few days with his uncle. Quite a little traveller for 12. SPEAKING OF VISITORS For those of you who are wondering about the extra boy I carry with me at all times, it is my 10 year old nephew, Bobby Holmes, from Virginia, who is spending the rest of the summer with.us. My brother, his dad and his mom were here recently and decided to leave Bobby here until Septem ber when my brother who is in the Navy receives his trans fer papers to Beeville, Texas, and will pick him up in transit. Bobby just loves the village and has made many friends in the short time he's been here. Of course it helps to have a 10 year old cousin, who is very well acquainted. He has joined our Little League and luckily was put on the same team with cousin Tom. If a vote of con fidence from a 10 year old means anything, he thinks ev eryone here is just great. A GREAT CIRCU6 TRIP Our bus left the beach at 5:30 with fifty-six young kids and six big kids on board. The six, who came under the title of chaperones, were Allan and Marie McKim, Don and Lois Parenti, Gerry Jensen, and my self. When our bus reached Crystal Lake to join the car avan, we had a few more kids added to our bus, as there was a shortage of buses. We had a load, but it was fun. I would say you parents can be quite proud of your young ones, be cause on the whole they were quite wgll behaved. There was the usii|^} amount of trouble, but it was easily handled. The circus itself was just great, with the clowns stealing the whole show as usual. And with a sleepy group of kids we arrived back at the beach at 1 a.m. I should say they were sleepy until we reached the vil lage limits, when a spontan eous chorus of cheers went up. Home, Sweet, Home!!! Sorry if we woke anyone up. Incidentally, Pm sure Lynn Gleeson would like to join me in expressing our gratitude to the kids on the bus for singing^ the traditional happy birthday1 to us. It was a sweet thought. They threatened us with the tra ditional spanking too. Pm not sure about Lynn, but most of the kids can't count as high as I am old!4!: LITTLE LEAGUE ACTION On Sunday, July 27, with our beach baseball diamond rain soaked, car loads of boys and parents travelled to Ringwood to use th6 diamond there which is located behind the school. The field there which slopes from homF^pIate to the out field, took a small amount of work to make it playable. All present thrilled to a very ex citing triple header. The Cubs beat the Braves 8-7 in the first game, in the second game the Tigers squeaked past the Bra ves 8-7, and in the third game it was again the Tigers clinch ing first place by beating the Cubs 15-13. Second place is still up for grabs, with the Braves holding it at present by a slim one game margin. There are still seven games left to play. ATTENTION RESIDENTS For those of you who haven't noticed, the rain has done a lot of damage to the beach area. A lot of money has already been spent on the beach this year, but now a lot more work will have to be done. This work is paid for by the Cullom-Knoll McHENRY -COUNTY'S NEWESTf | NEW CAR DEALER j Rips Up The Competition Again! f By Offering Classical Elegance At | CLASSICAL SAVINGS j THE 1969 I LINCOLN CONTINENTAL movr ULTIMATE IN LUXURY AND PERFORMANCE 4611 W. AREA MAN IN SUNDAY PAPERS For those of you who get the Chicago Sunday Sun-Times, I hope you read the Midwest sec tion of the paper on the 27th, There in beautiful color are pic tures of our village's neigh bors, the Hereford cattle and a story about the farms and Man ager Brad Scott. Brad Seott and his family are former residents of our village, and daughter, Sandi, a cute re-headed curly- top is a former Miss McCullom Lake. It was a very interesting story concerning our nearest neighbors. "LIKE GIVING A MAN A RABBIT COAT WHEN HE OWNS A MINK FARM' Jake Levesque was among the group of people attending the Republican Golf Day held on July 23 at the Country club. Jake had to leave the affair early to pick up his daughter at the airport, so he left his tickets for a special prize with his two friends, A1 Jordan and John Licastro. Prizes to be awarded consisted of sports equipment and gift certificates. When Jake's number was called, his friends had no trouble select ing the perfect prize for him. Here is Jake with 30 years ex perience in aviation, pilot, etc., and they picked for him "a gift certificate for a ride in an airplane!!!" Thank you friends!
