A few million people in this country could testify to the contrary. Myself included. I'm not a recent convert to the hobby of swinging along at a good pace for several miles. As a boy, I used to walk from the farm to the town and back on a regular schedule. And although I'm just as happy to be on wheels today, I still try to put in a reasonable amount of time traveling by legmobile. Obviously, it's no longer a matter of necessity. It's a matter of pleasure, and of keeping fit by means of my favorite exercise. This is one case where, in my humble opinion, pleasure and fitness really do go to gether. The fitness angle is familiar to us all. The medicoes never cease telling us that a good walk, for anyone in the right p h y s i c a l c o n d i t i o n , t o n e s u p t h e m u s c l e s a n d m a k e s t h e blood circulate properly. As for the pleasure, well, that should be in the plural -- pleasures. And the types you experience depend largely on where you do your walking. If it's in the country, you have the fresh air in your face, the good earth underfoot, and the flowers by the wayside to catch your eye. If it's in the city, you have the passersby to offer a touch of camaraderie, the stores for some quick window shopping as you pass, and, yes, even the traffic has an interest when you pause for a stoplight. Then there's the walk that doesn't include any of the above. Occasionally I'm too preoccupied with my own thoughts to notice what's happening around me. The beauty of walking is that you can keep going almost auto matically for long stretches at a time. The members of our walking club claim that their hobby has many virtues and no vices. I agree.
